Mom didn't have the easiest childhood. She lost her mother at the age of 11, then her dad began suffering strokes four years later. She was his caretaker until he died when she was 19. When she talks about the challenge of being housekeeper/cook/caretaker from such an early age, she never speaks with resentment or regret. It never occured to her to complain or wonder why--she just did what needed doing. Tenacity...
But Mom will be quick to tell you where she gets her strength. She asked Jesus to be her personal Lord and Savior at the tender age of five, and she learned early to lean on His strength when hers was gone. I so admire her strong faith, which was and is a never-ending source of encouragement to me. Seeing her live out her faith daily helped me seek my own relationship with Jesus when I was very young.
The third thing I admire about Mom is she refuses to get old. Oh, she's aging--the calendar says so, and there's evidence in her white hair and gently lined skin. But her attitude is never old. When I saw this picture and phrase ("It's important to have a twinkle in your wrinkle") I thought immediately of Mom. She loves to joke and tease, and most of the time it takes people by surprise because she looks so quiet and innocent. She's never mean-spirited, but she likes to have fun. And every time I'm with her, I have fun, too.
Mom is undergoing some significant health challenges right now, but in typical Mom-fashion, she isn't complaining. Doctors are baffled that she's doing as well as she is, given the situation, and I can't help but think it's her endless optimism, her spunk, and her ever-present faith that keeps her going. We'll be heading to the Mayo Clinic soon in the hopes the doctors there will be able to offer some help. But do you know what Mom is looking forward to? A trip with her family--Daddy, my brother, and me--just like when Brad and I were young and still lived at home. She expects us to have a very good time. And I have no doubt we'll be doing lots of laughing. That's just what we do.

Laughing... Proverbs 17:22 (KJV) says "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones." It's one of Mom's favorite scriptures. And no matter what happens, I'm sure Mom will find a reason to laugh. No dry bones for this spunky little lady...
I told Mom yesterday the birthday was hers, but having her as a mom meant the gift was mine. It put a twinkle in her wrinkled eyes and a real lift in my heart.
May God bless you muchly as you journey with Him! ~Kim

Kim,
ReplyDeleteYesterday--June 16--would have been MY dear Mom's 96th birthday. Like yours, she put a twinkle in her wrinkle, loved the Lord, and I'm very thankful for the Christian life she exemplied for me! Having a loving, Christian, 'twinkling' Mom is truly a gift from the Lord.
Please give your Mom my birthday wishes!
Moms are special people, aren't they, Judy? I think it's kind of neat that our mothers shared an "enter the world" date. And now I know where you get your twinkle (not that you're wrinkled yet!)--you inherited it from your dear mom. :o) Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteKim, what a touching tribute to your mom. Makes me miss mine all the more. She's 2000 miles away. She turned 60 this year and my daughter and I flew home to surprise her. Tenacity is what I'd say describes my mother too. Only child and at 12 ended up with alcoholic parents, so she took care of them too. Mom was 19 when her mom died and 33 when her dad died. :(
ReplyDeleteMom might not joke around or goof off as much, but she enjoys life, and she's always doing for others. She demonstrated serving to the fullest, and still does. We weren't super close when I was a child (I was always closer to Dad) but we have a great friendship today.
1-1/2 more years, and she and Dad will be here in Colorado living close by. Counting down the months....
Oh, and today is my parents' 38th anniversary. Better go call them. :)
ReplyDeleteTiff, one of the best parts of getting older is the way relationships with our parents change. I love calling my mom my best friend, and I love that my adult daughters are becoming my friends. Such an incredible blessing! CONGRATS to your parents on 38 years!
ReplyDeleteYour mom is a grand gal! I love her hugs and smiles. Wish I could've hugged her in June. Happy birthday, Helen.
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweet post! I loved reading about your relationship with your mom. She sounds like such a special person! You are blessed, and it sounds like you know it and give her the love and honor she deserves.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Carrie
Aw, thanks for the wishes, Eileen. You're one of the people who can hug Mom eye-to-eye...and your spunk reminds me of her. :o)
ReplyDeleteYes, Carrie, I do know how blessed I am to have a mother with such incredible faith. I pray I give her the honor she deserves, and that our family will carry her legacy of faith into the next generations.
What a beautiful post! You have a precious gift in your mother! And I'm sure you're a gift to her as well. LOVE the encouragement to keep young-at-heart and optimistic as we go through life. I thoroughly agree!
ReplyDeleteLOL about the outhouse. :)
What a precious tribute to your precious Mom, Kim!! Yes, having a loving, Christian Mom is such a wonderful blessing, and I'm so thankful the Lord blessed me with one. My Mama was truly my very best friend, and even after 5 years I still miss her terribly. But how sweet our reunion will be in Heaven one day! ~ Sounds like your Mom had a very special birthday - - please wish her a belated Happy Birthday from one of your biggest fans*grin*. ~ Am keeping her in my prayers and hoping you all receive some positive news at the Mayo Clinic. Hugs, Patti Jo
