Animals Among Us

In my post last week, Judy asked about the elephant and giraffe that had somehow sneaked their way into one of the pictures of fall around our house. I told her I'd share about them this week, along with some of the other animals lurking around our home, tucked beneath plants and window sills and tables, and nestled on hearths.

"Raffy," the giraffe (I know…how very original) was Mom's. She bought him to match her sofa, which we lovingly nicknamed her "Safari Sofa." And with good reason...
I hope you can see the print but in case you can't, it's got elephants and cheetahs and a bird that (I think) is a toucan (?).  Mom assured me that there was a giraffe somewhere in there, but as of yet I haven't found him. Maybe he's hiding beneath a cushion. And yes, I inherited the Safari Sofa and love it! It's what I cozy up in when watching Dancing with the Stars (speaking of...did anyone see that last night? Loved it! And sure hope Bristol stays! I used all my votes on that girl!).

Here's a statue of Jack that Mom got me when Jack first came to live with us. He was so tiny, about this size!

Next is our elephant, Granby. Joe and the kids and I found Granby years back when we were vacationing in Grand Lake, Colorado (near another town named Granby). Then there's Diego, who we adopted while at Sea World in San Diego. Next is a fun little black bear we found foraging in the woods while we hiked the Rocky Mtns in Breckenridge, CO, again many years ago. His name, as I'm sure you can guess by now, is Brecken. Then there's a mouse we picked up at some really fun place in Orlando. Can't remember the name of the amusement park, but we decided to call the mouse Mickey.

Next is ceramic dog I painted when I was...oh gracious...probably nine or ten years old (so yes, Judy, it's an antique). It's fashioned after Duchess, our sweet little Manchester Terrier we had as I was growing up. Next is an elephant from Jerusalem from Mom and Dad's travels. And lastly is a Lion and a Lamb I picked up some time back.

I know the exact phrase "and a Lion will lie down with a Lamb" isn't in the Bible (though variations of those animals, along with others, are found in verses in Isaiah), but I love the peace that this little pair represents. The peace we have in Christ, and the peace that awaits us in our forever home.

When I glance at these animals, I think of people I love and fun times we shared, and of great memories like drinking from punch bowls and "buzzing" opponents while playing Taboo, laughing so hard we cried, and those are bits and pieces of this life I'll carry inside me forever.

So, do you have any critters around your house? Any little friends or statues or such that remind you of how very blessed you are?

Tammy

And one final picture... Will the real Jack Alexander please stand up?

  1. "Will the real Jack Alexander please stand up?" LOL You crack me up! LOL I wonder what does it take for you to get Jack to stand still for these pictures (like the one next to the deceased bird,THAT HE HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH!) and now this photo. What do you promise him? A week of unlimited doggie treats or maybe a 7 day Doggie cruise? (smile) He is just too cute! It takes me numerous tries to get a still photo of my chihuahua, most of the time the photos come out with him as a white blur! LOL
Love your other "animal" friends around your home, love how each have a story (smile).
Have a great day...tell Jack he's a Champ and my hero (chuckle)
    Love, Veronica

  2. Ask a simple question and what do I get--the Chronicaling of America. Just kidding, Tammy. I really did enjoy hearing about all your critters, real, ceramic, and imagined (I know you have some of those imaginary ones or you wouldn't be a writer.) Like Veronica, I don't know how you get that sweet little Jack to sit and pose for his pictures. He's a real ham--must know he's super photogenic. Thanks for sharing.

  3. LOL Veronica. I just tell him to stay. That's it basically. Then reward him like crazy with kisses and atta boys when he obeys. Which isn't all the time. Just the other day he shot out across the street after a squirrel and nearly got hit by a car. Scared me to death. He got no kisses for that, let me tell ya.

And Judy, there's a reason why my books are so long, huh? LOL! Pithy I am not. But I'm workin' on it! Bye!

  4. This whole post made me smile. Love the unique animals and the sentiment behind each one. How comforting and cozy.

I used to collect teddy bears to commemorate landmarks in my life but I'm branching into gnomes now. LOL. And books.

  5. LOVED this post Tammy! But as I read and viewed the photos, I kept thinking..."What? NO cats?!?" Then I saw the lion and the lamb...so okay, a lion is a BIG cat, so that'll do *wink*. Such special memories you have in these "pets" and I also enjoyed reading about your Mom's safari sofa--so special.~ Besides my live furry friends running around in my house (not to mention my Son's bird and rabbit in his bedroom!) I do have several figurines of animals (mostly cats - - imagine that,LOL). One of the most special is a large ceramic cat that belonged to Mama and Daddy. She sat by their hearth in the last home (on earth) they shared, so now she sits on my hearth and brings a smile! Hugs, Patti Jo
P.S. Oh my...that Jack is such a cutie--and quite photogenic too!

  6. Love how you phrased this, Kav: "I used to collect teddy bears to commemorate landmarks in my life..."

Reminds me of the Israelites picking up stones as they crossed the Jordan in Joshua 4, as God instructed. Joshua tells them that when their children ask about the stones, they're to tell them, "God did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God."

These little animals (and gnomes) are reminders to us of God's faithfulness. And we'll testify to that the next time someone comments on them. ;)

How precious, Patti Jo. Love the thoughts you shared too. And the cat that now sits on your hearth. Wonderful reminders of love that will never end.

  7. Wow! LOVED the array of animals you've got at your home, Tammy, and the stories with each one make them that much more a treasure. Touching to see you inherited your mom's safari couch and the giraffe with it. Each one of those has memories with it...like those stones from crossing the Jordan.

Me? Well, if you don't count the endless pile of animals from my daughter's "Noah's Ark" theme as a baby and now butterflies (somewhere around 50 or more stuffed animals), I still have a few. Horses, eagles, wolves, and dogs. Ceramic, stuffed, some sort of hard material with fur-like covering, and of course our real dog, Roxie, and Beta fish. I've got stories for almost all of them, but not every one.

Oh and sorry, Patti Jo, no cats. :) We're just not cat people.

  8. Hi Tammy!

Loved your post, but oh my, what a menagerie you have! I loved the piccie of Jack and his statue sooo.ooo cute!

I noted one picture missing. Where were you in your safari suit? That really would have made my day!(Big grin!)

The only animals we have now, (since the family all left home) are our native birds in our garden, having survived my ginger cat who went to kitty heaven at age twenty, and two gold fish who swim in our well(their well....was mine!) Sadly one of them has gone to find Nemo.I discovered Flash was missing this morning,so Pete is about to take the filter apart to see if he has ventured up the hose. He had a habit of putting his head and some of his body inside the hose, but he always came out.Strange habits my fish have..quite bizarre! I hasten to say NOT like their owner! (Got in first there, didnt I?(grin)
Thanks once again Tam,I always look forward to your posts.

    Hugs,
    Rosie.

  9. 50 Noah's Ark animals, Tiff!? You put me to shame, woman! What a great theme for your daughter's room.

And Rosie, the story of your fish made me smile. Hope you found little Flash. Or did he go in search of Nemo too?

  10. Hi Tammy! No we think little Flash has indeed gone to find Nemo. He is definitely not anywhere in the well. I thought Goldie was looking a little fat yesterday and am wondering if she ate him. Do fish eat each other? Maybe someone can tell me the answer. Did I read that Tiff has fish? Maybe she can enlighten me.

    Rosie.
