Nailing Down Biblical Truth Before Life Topples

When I was a young Christian, the pastor of my church often said that Scripture needs to be interpreted with Scripture. A believer must not simply take the word of a teacher or preacher nor should we take Scripture out of context. We should examine the Scriptures, the whole of Scripture, to make sure we are not led astray. This became a cornerstone of my walk with Christ and established very early on a love for the written Word of God.

In my current Bible study (To Live Is Christ by Beth Moore), a recent lesson was on this very thing. The key passage was from Acts 17:11 which says:
“Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.” (NASB95)
Toward the end of the lesson, Beth wrote:
When we've learned to examine the Scriptures for ourselves, we have a few things nailed down when life starts to rock. I cannot express to you how studying God's Word has helped me when the earth around me seemed to quake. At times when everything seemed to fall apart in my life, the Word abiding in me kept me from falling apart with them.
Then she asked:
What is at least one Scripture or biblical concept you've nailed down that has kept you from toppling when everything around you seemed to rock?
Wow! Important question. Right now, the whole world seems to be rocking, doesn't it? The stock market falling again. Unemployment high. Governments in chaos. Riots. Wars and rumors of war. And of course, my own little personal world did quite a bit of rocking over the past year or two: broken ankle, losing my mom, having cancer.

So how did I answer Beth's question about what is nailed down in my life? The first two that popped into my head were:
"His grace is sufficient" (2 Cor 12:9) and "The joy of the Lord is my strength" (Neh 8:10).
I could have continued on if I'd had more time and the space to write the answers. An examination of the lessons learned through my life and the faithfulness of God (both when life is smooth and when life is rocky) would produce lots of answers. A long, long list of them. But the workbook only gave me two short lines to fill in so I stopped with the above.

Now I'm curious. How would you answer Beth's question? What Scripture or biblical concept have you nailed down that has kept you from toppling when everything around you seems to rock? Don't think about it too long. Share your first impression, the answer that popped into your head immediately.

  1. Great post, Robin....and right away I thought of "my" verse that I've clung to since 1987: Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7) ~ Although there are MANY verses of Scripture I love and rely on quite often, this particular verse seems to sum up what I need to remember: I need to cast ALL my worries on the Lord, whether it's a health concern or anything else. As long as I'm doing the best I can do, HE will handle the problem/situation. ~ A dear friend gave me a card with this verse on it back in 1987, the day before I had a C-section for daughter Rebecca. The doctors had told me I was carrying a baby with spina bifida (had even offered me an abortion--TOTALLY out of the question for me), so it had been a very traumatic pregnancy, to say the least. However, the Lord used that time and that experience to strengthen me, and since then I've been able to minister to others going through a very similar situation. (And by the way, Rebecca was born PERFECT - - not a single problem, AND she had a head full of beautiful red hair *smile*). ~ Thanks for this post today, and continued prayers for you, sweet lady. Hugs, Patti Jo :)

  2. Patti Jo, thanks for taking the time to write out all of this. Beautiful! And what an encouraging story about Rebecca.

  3. From Is. 43 "Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine. When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee. For I am the LORD thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour..." Life might be full of conflict, but I AM NEVER ALONE. His strength will sustain me. That's my solid rock on which I stand.

  5. Unoriginal as it may be, for all of my Christian life, the 23rd Psalm has given me strength and comfort. I learned it as a very young child and when I feel stressed or when the trials of life overwhelm, I am drawn closer to Him when I remember He is the one who restores my soul and provides needed comfort.

  6. Amen, Judy. When I broke my ankle and was lying in the hospital, my pain-muddled brain could think of only two Scriptures: the 23rd Psalm and the Lord's Prayer. I repeated them over and over again while I waited 20 hours for the surgery.

  7. Psalms 22:4-6 "In You our fathers trusted;they trusted and You delivered them. To You they cried out and were delivered; in You they trusted and were not disappointed."
The Lord spoke this to my heart many years ago while I was driving to work...it comforted me then and has many times since along life's journey. When we trust Him, we will never be disappointed...may not understand, may not be easy, but if you hold on and trust...you will never be disappointed.

  9. Mine is one that God brought to me at a time where I had literally just broken off (as in the day before) a long relationship. Isaiah 40:31 "but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." I was driving home from work and part of that verse was on a sign in front of a Christian school. I made it home, looked it up, and just cried, because God was the One who told me to end the relationship and there He was speaking to me and saying "keep it up, My daughter. Keep it up and stay strong."

Gosh, getting teary-eyed just thinking about it!

  10. Oh, Catherine. That's a favorite verse too. When I was going through a time of grieving and testing, God used a song with those words in it to encourage me. I remember the first time I heard it in church (the song, not the Scripture) and that I cried and cried. The song is called "They That Wait" (album is You Are The Work of His Hands by Stephen Anthony).

  11. What a great topic for a blog. I've been uplifted by what's been shared so far. And I just picked up a Beth Moore study guide -- Jesus the One and Only. I haven't started it yet but you've given me the nudge I needed so I'll be opening it up before bed tonight.

One of the verses that I cling to (wouldn't say I've nailed it, mind you) cling is a much better word! is "I can do all things in Christ who strengtheneth me." Phil. 4:13. Sometimes when I'm in a really stressful situation it becomes a chant in my mind. I don't always act on it the way I should though. Still working on that.

  12. Kav, I did Jesus, the One & Only earlier this summer. What a fabulous study. I think it was my favorite of hers, probably because it is all about Jesus. You are going to come away so enriched by the study.

Phil 4:13 is a terrific verse to hold onto, isn't it? Thanks for sharing!

  13. Robin, I lost my coment last night so having another crack at it today(Tuesday)
I sat an exam yesterday, was terribly nervous with the examiner breating down my neck.

Isaiah 41:10 came to mind, as I sat there. Fear not, for I am with you: do not be dismayed; I am your God: I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will uphold you with my victorious Right Hand.

BTW the exam results were posted on the computer late last night, I achieved 100%. Guess who was listening to my cry for help!?

Thank you for a very timely post Robin...You can see why I chose Isaiah 41:10 in answer to your question. :o)

  15. Robin.Thank you so much for this wonderful
post... It broght back to me my favoirite verse since I was in 4th grade, and I have held fast to it for many things in my life, Psalm 121:1-2 " I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord who made heaven and earth" and then Ithought of a couple more..
" Isaiah 65:24 Before they call I will answer, and yet while they are yet speaking I will hear" and
Psalms 27:14 "Wait for the Lord; let your heart be strong. Take Courage, Yes, Wait for the Lord"
these verses have help me thru the last 2 yrs of trials.. my husband has been given 18-24 months due to severe breathing problems and 2 anyeurisms on each of his intestines and the stress brought my seizures back to an uncontrolable point again and we are trying to get them controlled, and on top of that due to the severe storms we have had the house we have lived in for years has fell off the foundation and is falling apart rapidly and we have been house hunting and having a time at that.. but the good Lord has been with me thru each disappointment and tearfilled day and he gives me strength and comfort and helps me to go on and face each day knowing he is there and no matter what happens he knows about it and has a plan for us all worked out.. and I thank him and praise him for the many blessing we do have.. and I thank you for being so gracious and sharing your wonderful stories and this post so I can find this study by Beth Moore and take it.. I am anxious to begin.. God be with you and bless you, may he heal your body and give you strength and peace in the days ahead, hugs and prayers always sweetie,

  17. Robin, what a great post...and love the comments, too! I have many faves, but have to say Ps.73:26 (He is the strength of my heart and my portion forever...); for some reason, it was only vs. I could think to hold onto when my hub had sudden heart triple bypass...we had moved and were in strange area/strange doctors. Well, I knew why when 2 days after surgery, his doctor gave me his Card and that verse was printed on it!

  18. Jackie, I have a Scripture Song album that uses this verse, so as soon as I read your comment, the song started running through my head. Love it! Thank you for sharing with us.
