For instance, my Granny Gattis made the best Blackberry Cobbler on the face of the earth. Oh, I still remember smelling it baking in that old oven of hers, the cobbler juices all bubbly and spilling out, and the crust golden brown. And then her biscuits... The kind where she melted the butter on the bottom of the cast iron skillet so the dough would soak up all that rich goodness and leave your fingers all slick with yummy stuff. Sigh.
And then I grew up. And my metabolism changed. And I learned about clogging arteries and heart attacks and cellulite and turkey necks (not the fowl kind). And now I tend to stay away from those comfort foods. But some days...
There's just nothing like a warm biscuit with butter. Or a loaf of fresh wheat bread from the oven. Or a Southern tea cake drizzled with a glaze of powdered sugar. Or...this recipe I got from my latest issue of Southern Lady magazine.
Walnut Chocolate Loaf from the latest issue of Southern Lady
Delicious! And so simple to make. And I love Southern Lady Magazine.
Just last night my son and I were walking the neighborhood, and we were talking about how every step in life changes the view. How every experience flavors the next one and influences your perspective. And it's true. But the most wonderful realization came in the reminder that Jesus Christ never changes. Never.
He is steadfast. Immovable. Everywhere. All powerful. The Alpha and Omega. The Bright and Morning star. The Rider on the White Horse who has a name written on him that no human tongue has maligned or taken in vain (Revelation 19:12). And He's preparing a place for those who love him even now. Amazing! And guess what else...
I'm sure there's going to be a feast there! And I'm certain there's going to be comfort food too! And no cellulite! But to be in His presence, for all eternity. Now those are words of comfort that really fill me up.
So tell me, what's your favorite comfort food––and comforting Word from scripture––in recent days? I'd love to know. I'd also love to have you all over for a weekend so we could bake up a storm. What fun that would be. We'd make some wonderful recipes from the new Loveless Cafe CookbookSlathered with sweetness (but still lookin' for that halo),
Tammy
P.S. For Rosie... Here's Crisco! No Southern kitchen is complete without it. And yes, I still make my buttermilk biscuits with Crisco, just like my mama taught me. :)

You can bet that if ya'll are going to do that baking, and I get to join in the eating, I'll be happy to do the dishes, Miss Tammy! And about those turkey necks--I consider mine quite foul, but I'm giving credit to old age instead of good food. :) As for current Scripture that speaks to me: Psalm 62:8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us.
Mornin' sweet Judy, how I love you, friend, and I'm sooo looking forward to seeing you next week at ACFW! Thanks for that scripture. Besides Psalm 62:8 in my Bible now is the note, "Judy Miller's words of comfort, 9.13.11," and I'll pray that for you every time I see it.
Oh! you just brought back some great memories of my Mom's Peach Cobbler. In South Carolina where I come from, there is a place called "McLeod's Peach Farm" www.macspride.com
And Whoa Baby! they sell the best fresh peaches this side of heaven. In July which was the peak of peach season, we always go there to grab a couple of large baskets of those juicy, sweet yummy peaches. Getting plenty to eat right after a good rinse under the faucet and enough to make a big 'ol peach cobbler. My mom made her crust from scratch and if you remember that scene from the movie "The Help" where "Minny" talks about CRISCO...yep my mom swore that the stuff made the best pie crust and biscuits!
But that cobbler, which was baked in a large rectangular baking dish that she'd had for years, always came out nice and bubbly and that crust, all golden brown, flaky on the top and underneath all soaked up with peach juice! SIGH! What comfort!
But as life goes on and the journey is not always easy, the scripture "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." II Tim. 1:7 gives me comfort everytime the Lord allows me to come out of my "comfort zone" and go to a new level with Him. Not to be fearful, because that is not of Him and to know that He has given me a sound mind, even if this crazy world seems like it's gone off the deep end!
Have a great day! And Oh! that Halo...I borrowed it, had to deal with some whine-y co workers...it helped me hold my peace until I could see things God's way. Will send it back...Angel Express! LOL
Oh how I wish I could have been a fly on the wall with those whine-y co-workers, V! That made me smile. And your mom's peach cobbler... Divine! I have no doubt whatsoever that it's already on the menu at Home! And beside II Tim 1:7 in my Bible now, it reads "Veronica Brayboy's words of comfort, 9.13.11, along with the aroma of her mom's peach cobbler."
The decrees of the Lord are firm... and [truly are] sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. (Psalm 19:10)
Oh Tam!You really will be the death of me, you crack me right up I just loved seeing those piccies of your cookies and I could almost taste them and smell the delicious aroma wafting from your kitchen! :0)
Two weeks ago, I began in earnest to do something positive for my well being. Have been feeling pretty jaded for some months now so I did some research on foods that would be easy to digest, stir up the metabolic rate(What metabolic rate..did I have one??) and give me a feeling of wellness. Boring, some people might say, but no..I have found the exact nutritional plan that I need. It even includes my comfort foods, like chocolate and icecream, to say nothing of smoked salmon, gourmet cheeses and savoury treats which are to die for. The best thing is, that I am already feeling the benefits of my newly found food challenge and I am still able to enjoy my devonshire scones and yummy cakes every now and then.
I would just love to flit over for a weekend and help you (and I quote your words)"Bake up a storm." That would be an absolute rage, but guess I'll just have to imagine it all happening! (Sigh!!) Judy may just have other ideas about doing the dishes!! She'll come back with an appropriate comment. You wait and see! (Big grin!)
As far as my comforting Word from the Scripture, I would have to say all the verses in Psalm 23 give me comfort,so that has my vote, but especially the last line of verse 6. "I will dwell in the House of the Lord for ever."
I ask you Tam, what more could we wish for?
Great post as usual Tammy, thank you.
Rosie
Morning, Rosie! I tell ya, just the words "devonshire scones" makes me want to hop a plane to down under! They sound divine and I don't even know what they are.
Great to hear that you've found such a nutritional diet, a good, healthy food zone for yourself. So important.
And beside Psalm 23 in my Bible now, along with other scribbles in the margin, is this one, "Rosie's words of comfort, along with Devonshire Scones. Yum! 9.13.11" And I've also starred verse 6 and added your name. Thanks, Rosie, and much love, friend.
Good morning Tammy and Friends! Am about to dash out to purchase Wedding invitations (have I told you my Amy is getting married in December? *smile*). But, I had to visit my FAVORITE blog first---and now my tummy is starting to growl after reading about all this delicious food! Oh my! And Veronica, next July I think I might have to scoot up to SC and visit that peach farm--YUM! My Mama also made a Crisco pie crust, and it was the best!! ~ I have so many favorite verses highlighted in my Bible, but lately I've been returning to an "old favorite" in Psalm 61:2: From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the Rock that is higher than I. ~ LOVE this verse, and it always reminds me of WHO I need to lean on. ~ Hugs from Georgia (where it's a beautiful day!), Patti Jo :)
Hey Tam! Devonshire scones are warm scones that we have with jam and cream for a devonshire afternoon tea. Usually tea or coffee is served with it too. Very English tradition and I love it! We took my Mum out last Sunday to Kingston House, Kingston Park, a heritage listed, charming historical home (on the coast south west of Adelaide) for a very sumptuous devonshire tea. ...just a pleasant little outing to take away the sour taste, that 9/11 left in everyone's mouths!
We did enjoy it and Mum thought it was wonderful.
Now, can you please tell me, what is a CRISCO crust. Is it a certain brand name for pastry?
Cheers Rosie
I'm going to have to quit reading this blog on Tuesdays because every time I come over here when Tammy is posting, pfffttt, there goes my diet! But if we're only talking about it and not actually eating it, then my comfort food has to be scalloped potatoes or potato soup or even just plain old mashed potatoes...just about anything that starts with potatoes is yummy in my book. As for comfort Scripture, this one has become my new theme song: And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:19 So, so true!
Are you running out of room in your Bible yet, Tammy? ; )
G'day Rosie!
I'll explain to you about CRISCO since I started it :-) Here is a link that will tell you all about it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisco
(copy and paste in your browser)
Basically it is a solid shortening that has been used for many years in baking and frying foods. So there you have it! Don't think it's very healthy, but it makes foods taste really good. LOL
Rosie, Veronica already explained about Crisco shortening and pie crusts, but what Crisco means to me is old fashioned fried chicken the way my mom and grandmother made it. When you see the movie, The Help, there's a scene where Minnie is teaching Miss Celia to fry chicken (shaking it in a paper bag in the flour first, then into the pan with the Crisco). That could have come straight out of my childhood kitchen. Yes, I can feel my arteries hardening as I think about it, but oh my, so very good! Definitely a comfort food, with biscuits and honey.
I loved that scene from the movie as Minny gave Celia an "education" on Crisco! Love it! LOL
And Robin you are correct, when I was growing up that was the best fried chicken and biscuits(we ate ours with homemade peach preserves). Am I the only one feeling like they just gained 5 pounds just reading this thread???!!!
Let us know how the Wedding Invitation shopping goes, Patti Jo! And your sweet mom was right––no better pie crust than that made with Crisco. Sooo flaky! Beside Psalm 61:2, I now have written "Patti Jo's word of comfort, 9.13.11, and remembering her sweet mom's Crisco pie crust." :)
Yum on those Devonshire Scones, Rosie. They've just gone on my "must bake someday soon" list. Love baking new things, and taking them to neighbors or sending it up to Joe's office. I can't leave it here. Too dangerous!
Deb, you are a meat & potatoes gal! Beside Philippians 4:19 (along with my own notes), I have squeezed in, "Deb Raney's word of comfort (9.13.11) along with scalloped potatoes, potato soup and mashed potatoes." Love it!
And I still have some room in the margins yet. I write in a Bible until I fill it up, then get a new one. I love reading back through them, or reading through my current one when I'm looking up a scripture, and seeing your names by the verses. I'll say a prayer for that person each time.
Now I'm wishing we could all do a Girl's Night Out and go see The Help! Again. ;)
Oh Boy! Thanks girls, for explaining what CRISCO is...along with Veronica's (and her Mom's)Peach Cobbler and Robin's (and her Mom and Grandmother)old fashioned fried chicken, my mouth is watering big time! Probably just as well I took the measure to start my "health kick" two weeks ago. Now maybe I will have to adopt those two things as my comfort foods!
Thanks for the picture of CRISCO Tammy...I guess you added the PS and please DO make those scones...they are DIVINE. :0)
Cheers.
Rosie
I could think of so many foods that would be a huge comfort to my nauseous tummy...but the first thing that came to mind was warm slices of sourdough bread and some real homemade butter melting in my mouth. There's a Minnonite (hope I spelled that right!) community about an hour away that has a wonderful restaurant, bakery, and small grocery store right down the street. They have the best (ever!) baked goods and homemade butter. Comfort food haven. In fact, I think I need to go there soon! : ) Oh, I just wish I could come hang at your house for not just a baking day, but a girl's day! I could really use a girl's day : ). My verse for this week (we're doing it for homeschool...and I need it) is: Psalm 16:1--Keep me safe, O Lord, for in You I take refuge. Thanks for the fun post, Tammy! Blessings~Stacey
Stacey, you're making my mouth water talking about that bread. I got a recipe for bread from a writer buddy this week. Once I make it, I'll report back! : ) And beside Psalm 16:1 in my Bible, it now reads, "Stacey's words of comfort, 9.13.11, and warm bread fresh from the oven."
So appreciate you women! (As I was in BSF this morning, I was flipping through my Bible, headed toward Acts, and saw a couple of your names. Blessed me to no end!)
Oh man...those 4 Oreos I just had are SO not cutting it after reading this post! LOL I LOVE baking...reading recipes...looking at beautiful pictures of food...watching Food Network late-ish at night...
Can I come over and bake some cupcakes at this party? ;) I think it safe to say that those are my favorite thing to bake. I do a triple chocolate killer cupcake, mocha buzz cupcake, cherry cheesecake, caramel macchiato...experimenting in the kitchen, specifically cupcakes, is one of my BIGGEST creative outlets--next to writing.
LOL Meghan, I SO wanted to buy a package of Oreos while I was at the Walmart in Fayetteville the other day. Almost like since I was "out of town" my thighs might not notice I'd eaten them. : )
LOL!
