Movin' Down

I don’t know about you, but the place where I work determines how well I perform and how long I’m willing to remain at my task. Some time ago I had entertained the idea of moving my office from an upstairs bedroom to the walkout basement of our home. Then, as summer heated up, so did that upstairs bedroom. In spite of a new air conditioning unit, the heat this summer proved too much of an obstacle to keep the upstairs at a comfortable temperature—can we just say, I was a sweaty, miserable wreck trying to work up there--so I finally made it downstairs.

Unfortunately my talk of redoing the lower level into an office had remained only that—talk. So, in the midst of the summer heat, I decided it was time to take action and set to work on the project. Time wise and temperature wise, it wasn’t the best choice, but I finally managed to get most of the work completed. Now don’t misunderstand—I did not actually lay the carpet, paint the walls or install the light fixtures—that required people with more talent than I possess. My efforts, and those of my daughter and son, came in the form of grunt work. Jenna’s was more ongoing than Justin’s. He brought my old furniture down two levels of stairs. For Jenna, it mean days of packing and moving not only supplies, but BOOKS. Box after box of research books. She has now declared I can not buy anymore books unless I get rid of one or more in its place—but what she doesn’t know won’t hurt her and I’ve already purchased more since moving downstairs. Besides, the bookshelves aren't completely full yet. Of course, all the boxes haven't been unloaded yet, either. But that's another story.

The actual work area.
The typewriter bookends I couldn't resist. The table and chairs donated by Justin--in case I need to have a snack and keep up my strength while working!

The wrap-around couch donated by Justin.

And, of course, more bookshelves. :)

I also took over a small room and am using it to store books, supplies and it also has one more bookshelf. Hmm. I do see a copy of someone’s recent release. How did that get in there?

All that to say that I enjoy seeing where other authors work, so I thought I’d show you a few pictures of my new work environment. I do like it. I can look out the double doors at the backyard—there’s a couch where I can sit and read, and a television which I avoid turning on during work hours. The couch, along with the table and chairs were a donation from Justin. When he moved from Phoenix they wouldn’t work in his new home, so I was the grateful recipient. He also purchased this picture for me, but I haven’t yet decided exactly where I’m going to hang it. There are lots of options, but no nail holes until I’m certain!!

May you find joy as you create a place of comfort and spend time with the Lord. ~Judy

  1. Love the new work space! And there is no such thing as too many books! *nods firmly*

Now here's a question...how's the basement in terms of winter? Does it freeze? Do you need a space heater?

(You're talking to someone who spends the winter wrapped up in a blanket in the house) :-P

  2. Hi Judy. What a lovely office space you've created. But now, will you be cold in winter?? LOL Thanks for sharing the pictures. I always enjoy seeing where other authors spend their day!

  4. Way to go Judy! You've got yourself a beaut "Batchelors Pad" into the bargain, as Andy would say! Even the couch to to snatch 40 winks when you feel the need..in your spare time. Oh,on second thoughts,I just remembered about your workload for the next few months..no time for sleep dear lady! :(

Take comfort,in the fact that you have left(if you'll forgive the play on words here) "A Lasting Impression " on all of us with your taste in decor, but you can bet Tammy will be looking on your wall for a certain picture from St Louis... LOL! And yes, I do spy the book on the shelf! :)

As far as winter, do you have a furnace in the basement? You will surely be warm if you do...I think you have done a great job with your renos.

    Happy writing, friend!

  5. Hi Catherine,
Thanks for agreeing about the number of books. :) As for cold in the winter--when we first moved in this house, we used the downstairs area as a rec room and it was comfortable. I'm telling myself that basements are cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. However, I do MUCH better in cool than in hot weather.

Debbie, I'll keep you and Catherine posted if and when I begin to wear my thermal underwear so I can work down here. I'm hoping that isn't going to happen!

VERONICA--where have you been girlfriend? We've missed hearing from you--were you on vacation?

Rosie, you're right about having furnace vents down here and I do think I'll be fine. You're also right about not having time for naps. :)

  6. I love hearing about where authors work, what their offices look like. I am trying to make my "writing station" as workable as possible. I say "station" because Im still in a one room apartment, so space is very limited. I wish I had a room just for writing.

  7. Judy, I just want to say that your new office is even more gorgeous in reality than it is in the photos. If I could have figured out a way to shrink it all down and tote it back to Arizona with me, I would have done it in a heartbeat! LOL

This morning I'm tackling the project of cleaning up the mess I made in my own office during my last round of revisions. I would so much rather be curled up on that cozy couch of yours...hard at work with my nose in a research book, of course!

  8. Judy's writing nook is soooo wonderful. Made me want to go home and redo mine. We had a great time plotting and planning there and hopefully will do more in the future.

Oh and just to let you know - Amazon.com has my EMBERS OF LOVE as a free Kindle download. Wahoo!

  9. Judy,
Yes, October is a kind of rough month for me...late husband's birthday, late mom's birthday. We always made that month special and LOVED the season. For some reason this year hit me for a loop and my emotions sort of slipped backwards. So I have been walking it out with the Lord and He of course has been so faithful to me. I feel myself coming around now and rejuvenating my joy! I went with a couple of girlfriends to a Tea House over in Pennsylvania this past weekend and had a great time. I thank God that He is so patient with me as I continue to learn to trust Him in His plan for my life.
    Thanks for asking...
You know what? I always questioned those things that Tammy say about you...You really are a nice lady! LOL
    Love,
    Veronica
PS. Now Tammy, be nice when you read the above comment...straighten that halo girl! lol

  10. I like seeing other authors workspaces, too--always gives us ideas on how to improve our own. Working in a small space is really an exercise in determination. Hang in there and one of these days, you may get a bigger place that will let you spread out. :)

Thanks, Carol. I enjoyed getting to "show off" to you, Dave and Katie.

Tracie, you can come and lounge on the couch with your laptop any old time of day or night. Would love to do some more plotting. :)

  11. Dear, dear, Veronica. I am SO sorry to hear you've been walking a difficult path this month. My prayers continue to be with you, dear sister. Those special days are truly difficult and sure can hit without warning. I'm so pleased to hear you are "coming around" to your old self, filled with joy and laughter. And aren't girlfriends wonderful--going to have tea sounds like such fun. Wish I could join you--maybe one of these days. Much love, Judy

  12. Judy, you have the very first, original WRITER CAVE!
Forget the Man Caves. This is so much more cool! And it's impossible to have too many books. If those typewriter bookends disappear, please don't tattle on me. I won't say a word about how you artfully avoided showing what's hanging on the wall. (Everyone at ACFW says that hotel is still looking for a certain picture, though....)

  13. Cath, I hadn't thought about it being a Writer Cave, but that's a good name for it. :) As for the bookends, I'd come looking for them--and you! LOL.

  14. Oh Judy---your workspace is BEAUTIFUL!! You have the perfect set-up (including the snack table *grin*). Hmmm...the only thing I can see that you might still need are some cats lounging here and there, LOL. Then it would be purr-fect! (sorry....couldn't resist). ~ Hugs, Patti Jo :)
@Veronica, praying for you, sweet lady. And sending a hug your way!

  15. Thanks, Patti Jo. :) I'm not totally convinced about the cats. I like them when they belong to other people--does that make it okay for me not to own any??

  16. Judy, I love it! It's the perfect writing spot. And the table is perfect for plotting, too. Can't wait to see it in person. Didn't do so well with my October visit, did I? Since it's never going to snow this winter, maybe I can make it in November. LOL

    ReplyDelete
  17. Lori--I'm SO relieved to know it isn't going to snow this winter! Especially in light of tonight's weather report that it snowed in parts of Kansas (and a lot in Colorado) last night. So come on down--and if you get snowed in--that's more time to visit, write, and make chili. :)

  18. Your office is perfect, Judy! Just perfect. I can just picture you there. And so neat that Justin's things fit your office so well.

HOWEVER, I'm a little jealous about that one book on your book case. In fact, it's making a lasting impression on me. ; ) I'm told there's one coming my way, too, and knowing that, I actually passed up a chance to buy a copy, but alas (HINT HINT HINT) still no book has graced my mailbox. I'll be at a B&N tomorrow...may have to break down and buy me a copy! I hear it's a GREAT book!

  19. Oh good grief, you snarky little thing! Your copy is coming, Ms. Raney. I promise. I mean, it IS dedicated to you. Next time I'm going to send you a peanut butter twist and be done with it! LOL!

Judy, I LOVE your writing salon. Beautiful! Truly lovely. Especially your bookshelves. I don't know...there's just something about a certain shelf...

And to Veronica, you're so loved lady. I'm so sorry this has been a rough patch for you. Know we're praying for you and so appreciate you being here with us in this community.

Deb here: Well, NOW we're talking! Peanut butter twist? I accept. Trying to be patient, really, I am...but it's not easy!

Just love how fast you jumped on that tho. Like to keep you on your toes! : )

  21. It was fun to see your writing space. Thanks for sharing!

  22. Thanks, Deb. And BTW, I love your new hairdo. :) As for that book on my shelf--don't feel that I received it due to the love and kindness of you know who. I selected it as one of my books to received from the publishing house. She obviously loves you since the book is dedicated to you--and I didn't miss that!!

I can't say too much about Tammy being slow mailing books--I think I still owe her one. :(

Pam, it was my pleasure sharing the office space--just wish everyone could join me down here and we could have one of those tea parties Veronica mentioned. That would be so fun!

  23. Seems like there was a book SOMEONE was going to send me... To Have and To Not Have? No, that's not exactly the title. Though there IS truth in that one...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hmmm, seems you still Have Not. It will be in the mail tomorrow--maybe. LOL.

  26. Can't say too much about Tammy delaying sending out books. I got Blood Covenant in two days. Granted...I was such an eager beaver, I sent her my address first thing in the morning, before anything had a chance to distract her :P

  27. Im hoping to get a bigger place soon. Soon being next year(hopefully). It depends on if the owners buy a new place. It is currently a store, but it's a great size for a one person apartment, and there are bookcases built in everywhere. The counter setup even works great for a kitchen layout. If that happens, there will be more writing space.
