I began reading the book as a galley on my Kindle and was already in love with the contents. But then, like icing on one of Tammy's yummy confections, my publisher provided me with an advance hard cover copy. Oh, dear Austen fans, this book is beyond scrumptious. The cover is cloth and has a wonderful, old-fashioned feel, but that's just the beginning.
Take a moment to follow the link and look inside the book. There are about 100 devotionals. Each begins with a short excerpt from one of Jane's novels, followed by a correlating spiritual lesson. Perfect to begin your day with or to be the last thing you read before you retire for the night.
Here's a paragraph from the Introduction:
"Jane did her readers a great service when she used the gift God gave her to touch the world with her writing and wisdom. May each of us do the same with our own talent, and offer glory to God and beauty to our fellow man."If there is an Austen lover on your gift-giving list, this is a book for them. No, it won't arrive on Christmas but you could always send a gift card and tell them to watch for a special surprise by mid-January.
Now, I think I'm about ready for an Austen movie marathon. Are you ready for me, Mr. Darcy?

Hi Robin!
ReplyDeleteI can hardly wait for the "Jane Austen Devotional" to be released.
As a matter of fact I started listening to my audio book (P&P)yesterday morning, so yes...roll on Mr Darcy!:)
I simply love Austen!... Happy Reading/listening!
Cheers,
Rosie
This book intrigued me from the minute I saw it. Can't wait to read it!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books, so...this devotional is a must have for me once it's released!
ReplyDeleteSounds delightful! would LOVE to read it! Thanks for the tip. Also a shout out to any Jane Austen fans, Masterpiece Theatre did an "Austen series" in 2007 (was televised on PBS)"Persuasion" and, "Northanger Abbey" were just couple of the ones re-done with all fresh actors. You can purchase or rent them from your local Library. The acting, costumes and scenery was absolutely wonderful!
ReplyDeleteRosie, I love getting to read these short excerpts, all reminding me of some great reads.
ReplyDeleteAnne, I think I can safely say that all believers who are Austen fans will love this book.
Lindsay, you can pre-order the book from online bookstores if you wish.
Veronica, I've rented all of those Masterpiece versions. I looked at my DVD library yesterday, and the only Austen film version I don't own is Northanger Abbey.
How delicious and how silly for them not to have it ready for Christmas! What were they thinking? My shopping could have been done in one fell swoop! LOL. I'll definitely be buying this one.
ReplyDeleteRecently I've been doing something similar with the inspirational fiction I read. I pull out a scripture and an 'aha' moment from the book and journal about it. It's been a really neat way to delve deeper into God's truth and from a completely unique angle. Makes my reading all the richer!
Kav, I have no idea why the books weren't made to be ready for Christmas. Publishing has its reasons, but can also be a strange business. What a wonderful idea about pulling out something you read in Christian fiction and journaling about it.
ReplyDeleteVeronica, are the ones that showed on Masterpiece Theatre the ones made by BBC? A friend and I got together and watched a couple of them together when they were airing, and that's when I went out and ordered all six of them!
ReplyDeleteTruthfully, I'm not a huge Jane Austen fan in the book sense. I think it's because I do have a bit of a comprehension disorder, so reading anything like that is too heavy for me :-( I tried Jane Eyre, read the unabridged version, and got through it, but didn't really enjoy it :-( But I do love the movie versions of the classics!
Catherine, you asked Veronica but I'll answer. Yes, the Masterpiece versions were made by BBC. Same ones. And since you struggle with reading the classics (I SO understand), you might try listening to them on audio books. I've found I can get through a book that way when I couldn't get through it reading. I listen in the car so I can't just walk away from it by putting down the book.
ReplyDeleteOoohhh, how exciting! Thanks for letting us know about this, Robin. Something nice to look forward to in January! :)
ReplyDeleteBlessings, Patti Jo
Ooh...this sounds fun! After your post I watched Lost in Austen on youtube...I really enjoyed it! I must say, though, that the Mr. Collins in that story made me cringe! He wasn't as tolerable as some of the other Mr. Collins.
ReplyDeleteI also love the movie "North and South". It reminds me of some of my favorite Austen stories. A friend also recommended Larkrise to Candleford. I've only watched a few episodes on youtube but it looked good, too! After all the football that's been on lately, I need a serious girls night myself! Bring on the Austen! : )
Blessings~Stacey
Stacey, North & South is one of my favorites. That was the show that made me fall head over heels for Richard Armitage. He played Guy of Gisbourne in the BBC Robin Hood series, and I never could hate him as the villain in Robin Hood because of what a great hero he was in North & South. Sigh... Larkrise to Candleford is another wonderful British series.
ReplyDeleteOH my gosh does that look fabulous!!! Birthday list! ;)
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the BBC Robin Hood...but I love Richard Armitage, too! I love that last scene in North and South...at the train stop. Definitely in my top 10 movie moments!
ReplyDeleteGot an email from the Library that "Lost in Austen" is ready for pickup! Know what I'm watching this weekend! yaaaaaay!
