Bantering Books & Unfinished Business

Tuesday I had the privilege of spending the day on the Bethany House Facebook Page and bantering with readers about books, cats, kids, chocolate, e-readers, and whatever other topic grabbed our fancy. Such a fun day with lots of great comments from a host of participants.

But there was one topic that didn't find completion. I asked for assistance in choosing the desk to grace my office, which is being remodeled as we speak. We took a vote, and...wouldn't you know!...they were evenly split between...

Desk #1, and...Desk #2.

Which means I need ANOTHER vote. Will you please cast your preference? My office walls are being painted a very subtle grayish-lavendar and I'll be doing some stencils with a deep luscious purple called Boysenberry. My shelving unit is walnut, and my floors will be hardwood with a lovely traditional area rug in shades of cream, lavender, sage, and eggplant.

So...which desk do you think would best fit the room? I love both of them and simply cannot decide. Cast your vote and I'll toss your name in for a drawing of something hope-related in honor of the beautiful stencil which will grace the wall behind my desk...whichever desk ends up being mine.

Oh! And speaking of drawings...the following people have won a copy of Song of My Heart in appreciation for their participation during Book Banter.

SHARON LARSON MOORE

CHERIE HAMBY KASPER

ANGIE ADAIR

CHRISTY BARKER JOHNSTONE

GLENNDA BURT

LENORE FUJIBAYASHI

Winners, please email Noelle Buss (noelle.buss at bethanyhouse dot com), tell her Kim sent you, and share your snail mail address so she can send your book to you.

Thanks to all who joined me on Tuesday! I had great fun. And thanks in advance to those who will help me choose the desk where I will write my gentle stories of hope. :o)

God bless you muchly as you journey with Him! ~Kim

  1. Kim, I hate I missed out on the book banter. We ended up at my brother's place to hang out. Had a blast, but hated to have missed getting to chat with you!! As for the desk, with all the lavender and stenciling, I'm thinking Desk 2 may fit a little better. I do love the heaviness of Desk 1, I think it might be too much for the room. So my vote, D2 :-)

  2. I love, love, love desk #1! Please tell me where you found it!

  3. Still like Desk 2. I think it would go better with the room, however Desk 1 does provide more storage. Congratulations to the winners. I plan to look up and try to get some of your books to read. Cannot wait! Melissa L.

  4. It's hard to know which desk would look better in your space. I too love them both, but I think I'd have to pick desk #1!

  5. LOL Well, here we go again...thus far the vote is split. :o)

Catherine, sounds like you had a good day!

Melissa and "Blessed"--thanks for sharing your thoughts. :o)

  6. Had a fantastic time bantering with you on Tuesday, Kim. =)

I *love* desk one ... but since your color scheme includes lavender and sage, I'd go with the second desk.

Congrats to all the winners. =)

    Blessings all!

  8. Jenny, at this point, you're the "tie-breaker." :o) Thanks for coming by!

  9. Lovely desks, both of them. But I would definitely go with Desk #2. Reason being... I had a desk similar to #1 at first and while "lovely, beautiful, wish you were here,"* I sooo missed the space on the top of the desk to spread out. And when in the heat of a book, I love to spread out. Plus I love the openness that Desk #2 creates in the office. Desk #1 is far more formal and structured. Desk #2 is more carefree and you can change the decor around it more easily should you desire to make changes in the future.

Now, with that openness (#2), however, comes the computer/extra monitor cords. What to do with them? My desk faces two windows that are on the front of the house, so when you walk into my office, you get the side view of my desk, not front, so I just drape the cords in a "black ribboned cluster" down the lefthand side. Voila! Taken care of.

One last thing, I got a little "claustrophobic" with Desk #1 after a while. No, I wasn't ever huddled beneath it, LOL, but I love the roominess where I can move and stretch my legs beneath my desk now. Sometimes I pull a heater under there if my feet are cold. Or I'll put a tiny stool to prop up my feet if my back needs a break. Very versatile.

Anyway, that's just personal preference. Both desks are lovely though. Happy deciding!

  10. Love love love desk 1!!!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Definitely Desk 2!! Looks appropriate for the type of writing you do.

    ReplyDelete
  12. While I like #2, I think #2 would fit you Kim, I like the delicate aura it gives off, to me it just says "Kim" and thank you so very much for the book!!! :) Glennda

  13. ooops meant while I like #1 :/

  14. Forgot to mention something....

From my previous post you'll see an asterisk after the phrase "lovely, beautiful, wish you were here."

Quick! Can you name the movie that phrase is from? First one who gets it right, gets a copy of Deborah Vogts SEEDS OF SUMMER. Wonderful book!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Desk 1 is simply beautiful. It has a lot of character.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Kim, I like desk #2 the best. I think it would fit nicely with the color scheme you have chosen.

    Blessings,
    Tammi

  17. I say desk #2!! It just seems to say Mrs.Kim all over it!!! From the description of the room it will look wonderful!!! I "HOPE" desk #2 wins!!!

  18. #1 desk!
    Love it.
It just speaks comfort, ease, and your characters will love it!

  19. Tammy, I am going to guess Mary Poppins.
    She would say that!

  20. I absolutely love #1, but #2 looks like you, Kim, and I think it would match the color scheme. Just a reminder that while you're letting us do the pickin', you're the one who has to sit at the desk so I hope you already know you'd be comfortable at either one. :)

AND, all you readers need to skip over and see our own Tammy Alexander being featured on Christy Jordan's wonder blog today. You can see it here:

  21. It was a lot of fun chatting on Tuesday!

I missed the desk vote though! Good thing I can weigh in now, haha...Hmm...I'm going to go with Desk #2. I love the lines, and how the keyboard slips quietly from view, without losing the effect of a nice table. And the color, love the color.

Your new office sounds great! We get to see pictures, right? ;o)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Thanks to everyone who has shared their thoughts! We're still running neck-and-neck. Ack! LOL I might have to do an eenie-meenie-miney-mo thing. Heh heh heh... And yes, when the office is completely revamped, I'll do the "great reveal" right here at Writes of Passage. :o)

    ReplyDelete
  23. No, not Mary Poppins... Here's a hint...

    Think France. ; )

    ReplyDelete
  24. French Kiss and desk 2. Love, Kimberly Smick

    ReplyDelete
  25. The movie is French Kiss.

    I like Desk #2.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I still like both but Tamara Alexander makes some good points so number 2 does sound like a good choice. Your wall color sounds beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ha! Great job, Kimberly. If you'll email me your addy on my contact page (link below), I'll get this book in the mail to you!

LOVE that movie, btw. Oh, so cute! That scene in the train car when she's sleeping and kisses him. The look on his face. Oh. My. Word.

  28. movie quote..french kiss?? I like desk #2 best for what you describe but i like #1 for storage. Where would you keep paper and pens at in desk #2?

    ReplyDelete
  29. LOVE that movie! Yay! Thank you so much!!

    ReplyDelete
  30. i can see where you and your voters would have trouble deciding on which desk to choose. i didn't read whether that will be the only flat surface in the room? But with flat surface comes the tendency to clutter (in my world) and though i like open spaces, i also like to hide messes. So...desk #1

Thanks for letting us peek into your world a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I really love desk #2, especially with the colors you described.
    Thanks!

  32. Desk #1 for sure!!! It is FABULOUS!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Definitely desk #1 - it is more elegant :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Tamara - the quote is from "French Kiss" with Meg Ryan

    ReplyDelete
  35. Desk #1! Would love to have it myself! :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. I am still for Desk #1 . Bet your office will be beautiful from all you have said. God bless

    ReplyDelete
  37. If desk #1 has the same slidout feature as #2 then it looks like you could create more fabulous works there. I would advocate for a MUCH better chair though!!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. LOVE desk #1, it's sooooo unusual. Hope it is comfortable too.

    Have a God Filled Day
    Shirley

    ReplyDelete
  39. Kim, I like both desks, and if it were me, my deciding factor would come down to (1) the larger desktop as I always need more space to spread things out, and (2) if I was in need of more bookshelf/storage area which desk #1 has and desk #2 doesn't.

    Robin

    ReplyDelete
  40. I like desk# 2 looks more like a ladys work space. I read all of your books. I'm a series reader and I collect Tracie's, Tamera's, Judith's,Deeannie's, Kim's and a few others. Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well, I think the tide is turning slightly. And some of you have great reasons to choose one or the other. I like the storage space and great surface of Desk 1, but the "airy openness" of Desk 2 also appeals. I do have other storage in the room, so I wouldn't HAVE to have lots of storage in the desk itself, but I DO need a lot of room to spread out books and so forth, and.... Here I go, talking myself into a corner again! LOL I hope the votes keep trickling in.

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'm still leaning toward desk #2--the off-white one. Tammy brought up an excellent point. The oval one--while lovely and graceful in its curves--will limit your desktop space if you need to spread out research books or characterization charts. Also, with your description of the area rug, it has to be desk #2. They will sing together.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love desk #1!!! Just looks like something you could keep forever no matter the decor :)
    Carrie b.

  44. 43 comments already--WOW!!! ~ Sorry I missed the book banter Kim, but am sure those who participated had a great time. ~ Both desks are SO lovely, but I'd go with Desk #2 (for practical reasons). What a fun decision for you to have to make *smile*.
    Hugs, Patti Jo
p.s. You might want to also see which one your KITTIES would prefer*wink*.

    ReplyDelete
  45. LOL Patti Jo, I think regardless which one finds its way to my office, the cats will find their way to its top! :o)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love them both, but Number 2 is what I would choose for you:) It's airy, clean looking...it's feminine...I love it! You have other storage, so that's not an issue. Happy choosing:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I love both, but I would choose desk 2 for you! It's a writer's desk for sure. Enjoy it! :)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Kim, I was there for your day on Bethany Banter and enjoyed it a lot, I dont remember seeing the ? about desk but it was a busy day.
I vote for #1, love the look of this and think it would go with your new decor....

    ReplyDelete
  49. Desk #1 for sure. No such thing as too much storage, and I love the little built-in bookshelf on the front.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Kim, I think Desk #1 is beautiful, but I think it is much too formal and heavy for your room.

I cast my vote for Desk #2. It is Beautiful and I think you enjoy the airy, openness of this one.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love the features of desk 1 Kim, but given your description of your decor, I think desk 2 would lend itself perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I vote for desk #2. I enjoyed talking to you on Tuesday.

    Angela from KY

  53. I like both of them but I vote for desk 1 since that is what I prefer. I always like a desk that has some storage space. The other one, though pretty, looks more like a table. Either one would be lovely in your office. I hope you post photos when it is completed.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Both desks are lovely but I think #1 looks a little too formal for what I imagine your offic to be like. #2 is more feminine--looks perfect with your purple! I vote for #2!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Although both desks are lovely, & desk #2 has more desktop space, I vote for desk #1. Why? Because it is unusual. Everyone has a desk like #2. Besides that, it's practical & everyone should take a chance sometime. But, it comes down to whatever works for you!

    ReplyDelete
  56. I love the look of desk #1, but I agree with Tammy about the claustrophobic feel of it after a while. It is gorgeous, but I think #2 would be a more appropriate buy for the open space to spread out books, computer and cats...

    ReplyDelete
  57. Kim, thank you for the book. I simply enjoyed the time with you on Tuesday, wish I could have stayed on longer. I have thought of another question I wanted to ask. I vote for Desk #2. After seeing some of the furniture in your house I can see why you like #1. I, myself, thinks it is lovely, but way to heavy for you. Storage can always be provided for in other ways. Can't wait to see the finished pics.

    ReplyDelete
  58. You know, I just wish we all felt more comfortable expressing our opinions. ROFLOL!! I'm LOVING this!

Definately desk one. It is wonderful.

    ReplyDelete
  60. They're both terrific choices. Here's my vote, Kim: buy both. Keep #2 for yourself, and send #1 to me! LOL!
Actually, I gave Kelly my wonderful antique desk because I can't sit at one now. My son got the desktop. I found a little lapdesk/cooling tray to use with my laptop as I change from rocking chair to sofa to standing at the nook.
You'll have to take pictures after you do the stencilling and have the winning desk in place.
    Cathy

  61. I vote for desk #1 for the simple fact that it looks elegant as well as practical and has storage space in it. Desk #2 looks kinda useless to my way of thinking, more like something you just look at rather than use.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Still voting for desk#2...just love it.Jackie T.

    ReplyDelete
  63. HA HA! Might as well put in my 2 cents. I like desk #2. Open, roomy, and the cream color will be beautiful with anything purple! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  64. Oh, and Tammy, you're so sweet to offer one of my books here! Thanks! And to the winner, I hope you enjoy it Kimberly!

    ReplyDelete
  65. I like the dark desk. It's much more unusual and very pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh my goodness! Lots more responses than I anticipated, and sooooo much to consider as I choose the desk on which I'll probably pen at the least the next nine novels... Wow. Thanks, everyone, for helping me make a decision! Y'all are the bestest. :o)

(Cathy, I'll give that whole buy-two/share-one idea some thought. *wink*)

    ReplyDelete
  67. Wow I really like both desks but with your other decor choices I think desk #2 would look best. Although they both really are grand aren't they? :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. If you're still taking votes on this, I vote for Desk 1, because it's beautiful, and if I were the one getting the desk, I know that that one would carry me away on all kinds of journeys of the imagination. I like the other desk too, but it's more of a table than a desk, which is a pity.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm in the redecorating mood too. :-) I love the look of desk #1. I want that desk. BUT it sounds to me like desk #2 would fit your room better IMHO. Have fun!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Kim, if you haven't already made your decision, I think Desk #2 would fit best in the office you described. It has a nice amount of space on top and is open on bottom, which will give a lighter sense to the room. I think it will complement the color scheme you have chosen. Either way you go, I know you will love it. Enjoy your redecorated office, Kim!

    ~ Andrea Cox

    ReplyDelete
  71. I'm probably to late to get in on the actual decision but if I were choosing a desk for me, I'd definitely go with #1. Kim, I think you should choose the one that works best for you.
    Hope your trip is fabulous
