Just some friends going for funnel cakes and a ride on a Ferris Wheel--it sounded like a fun evening. Aimee hopped in the car, and away they
went.
Three-and-a-half years ago, Colin introduced Aimee to us. He'd told us she was "tiny and beautiful and half-Cuban."
Tiny--yep.
Beautiful--yep.
Half-Cuban... really? I’d pictured a dark-haired, brown-eyed gal. Nope. Blonde hair and green eyes. It was the first of many surprises. We went out for Mexican food that evening, and I asked Colin to pass the salt. He decided to salt their basket of chips first; Aimee smacked the back of his hand and told him to pass it to me first.
Are you falling in love with her? We did. The next time I saw Aimee, I told her she was "ours."
Aimee lived with us for awhile. She and Colin started taking college classes, and I knew my son had fallen hard. How? For an English assignment, he wrote, "Aimee makes me want to be a better man." At that point, she hadn't even baked her killer cupcakes yet.Fast forward. They've matured and found their place in the world--working long hours and making tough decisions. A few decisions gave us pause, but part of parenting is letting go while still loving and praying. God is faithful. And my son made an important decision.
He decided to propose. Take a look at his smug smile, standing beside Aimee here. As any mama knows, that is the smile of a son who's up to something. Schemer that he is, Colin planned the time and place. He bought a ring, and I hid it until the big day. Aimee didn’t hav
ea clue.
How could she?
Seriously—what guy drags along two of his pals when he’s going to pop the question? But one of those friends is a photographer. The pals lagged behind and got in the next b
ucket on the Ferris Wheel. Around once. Around twice. Colin grabed a kiss for luck.

Now I'm wearing a schemer's grin because I know something: Colin loves Aimee, and he wanted to surprise her with the ride of her life. The truth is, Aimee is a spitfire, and that shining ride was just a beginning. Married to her, our son is in for the ride of his
life!
life!
Oh--and because it's all in the family now, the secret ingredients to those killer cupcakes? Love and a handful of funfetti candy speckles regardless of the flavor.
Here's to a colorful ride!

Essie and our other single sisters: How wonderful it would be to see each of you have your very own Happily-Ever-After!
ReplyDeleteI HAVE A PLAN.
(My husband runs whenever I say that.)
1) Pray for YOURSELF--that God will mold, strengthen, soften, mature you. Be His daughter, walking in His will, and wait in faith.
2) Pray for Mr. RIGHT.--God is using this time to mature him, mellow him, and create in him the capacity to love you as Jesus loves the church.
3)even after you meet, until your last day on earth keep up on those prayers.
4) Gather a prayer team.
A handful of years ago, some of us at a retreat began praying for a single gal who desperately wanted to be married. As time has passed, I've been in seven such prayer groups. Three of the women felt they were doomed to utter loneliness because of age, being divorced, appearance, or that "all the good ones are taken." Those three actually LAUGHED when we offered to pray. Those three are all laughing in their wedding pictures.
From the day each of my kids was born, I began praying for their future mates. Family joined me--and dear friends, too. We've had the joy of watching love blossom in their lives, and the pleasure of answered prayers.
Count thus far: 5 married. 1 engaged. PRAYER MATTERS!!!
*~~~WAVING MY HAND~~*
If you are single, I volunteer to be part of the group who prays for God to do a loving work in your life.
Hope and dreams are like individual feathers and air. It takes prayers to hold everything together and faith for us to fly.

What a sweet proposal idea!!! How excited to them--congratulations! <3
ReplyDelete(I do hope my "guy" does NOT propose to me in that way, or in any high place as I am utterly freaked out at heights!) LOL
Thankyou Ms. Hake for the advice!
ReplyDeleteThe man who marries me has to be a Believer, and I will definitely pray that God shows me the right one.
I still have quite a bit of time, but I know God has already made a match for me in heaven. :)

PS -- I just bought "Virginia" on Saturday and finished the third story this morning. It is wonderful like the rest of your books! I don't know how you manage to write so beautifully, inspirationally, and humourously all at once!! Thank you!
Meghan--I AGREE! I don't do well with heights.
ReplyDeleteAs a mother, I had to feign calmness because I certainly wouldn't put my kids in a Ferris Wheel alone. Courage, prayer, and a Ferris Wheel got me a daughter-in-law.
Essie, I'm glad you're enjoying Virginia. Researching those books was fascinating--we tend to use about 10% of what we learn in a book, so I always feel blessed to have discovered so many interesting things from the past.
