As authors, we’re frequently asked what or who inspired us to write a particular book or where our ideas come from. When Lorna began this series, I was interested in how she’d come up with the idea. Here’s what she told me. “My father grew up at Lake Manawa after its heyday. When the park closed in 1927, my grandfather purchased one of the bath houses for $300 and moved it to a lot where the Midway had been. They made the bath house into a home and that’s where my dad lived when he was a boy. He told me about what the place had been and I decided to research it.” Isn’t it neat to have such a personal connection to the place you’re writing about? I was gobsmacked, as Rosie would say.
In this particular book, a roller coaster is constructed for the enjoyment of visitors to the lake. Of course, writing about the construction of the roller coaster required a great deal of research. So here’s a word of warning: Unless you have unlimited time, don’t ask Lorna about constructing a wooden roller coaster—she knows far too much and is far too willing to share her vast knowledge on the topic.
Lorna’s books are humorous and light, but they carry a strong spiritual message. In The Ride of Her Life, the protagonist, Lilly, is having a faith crisis but she doesn’t want to admit it. Her faith that God is watching over her has been shaken. Over time she comes to the understanding that despite the storms in her life, God has not abandoned her or her young son.
Below is the back cover copy:
Filled with delightful characters and the romance of summer, The Ride of Her Life is another supremely entertaining story from the witty Lorna Seilstad. Readers will laugh out loud and sigh contentedly as they spend the summer of 1906 in Lake Manawa.
If you leave a comment and your email address, I’ll enter you in a drawing for a copy of this delightful book that will make you laugh, cry, and touch your heart.
May you find joy as you share a good read with others. ~Judy
P.S. Prayers for Rosie as she goes for her eye surgery (probably already over by the time this is out, but she'd still appreciate our prayers for a good recovery).
This sounds like such a good book. I love learning about this time period and this is a new writer for me. I can't tell you how much I am enjoying this blog. I find it so Interesting reading about what makes writers tick. I've visited each and every contributer's personal website and enjoy them just as much. My email is kaw5931(at)gmail(dot)com. I would love to have a copy to read.
ReplyDeleteIt does look like it could be a great book...I have to admit, I've not read any of Lorna's books before. Could be a great starting point! catherine.dacosta09@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteAs for Rosie, praying for you, Sweet Lady! I told you I wrote it on my calendar for yesterday, and wouldn't you know work was INSANE, so I didn't even think about praying during the work day (the calendar sits on my desk and stays there!). BUT God intervened, because as I drove to my hair appointment, I go "It's the 8th!! Rosie has her surgery tomorrow morning while I'm sleeping!" and started praying. When you get the chance, let us know how you're feeling!
Hi Kat,
ReplyDeleteI'm delighted to hear that you enjoy the blog (except for Tammy's posts, of course). LOL. We'll get your name in the drawing for Lorna's book.
Catherine--I know Rosie appreciates the prayers!
I'll get your name in the drawing, as well.
Thanks for sharing about Lorna's book, sweet Judy---LOVE that cover! Definitely one I'll plan on getting at my local Books-a-Million. ~ I was so glad to meet Lorna in person last Sept. at ACFW---actually, as I remember....it was Lorna who snapped a pic of you, Tammy and moi in your hotel room! (that was right before you attempted to "steal" that hotel painting, LOL). ~ Thank you for the note about our precious Rosie--I was going to add the prayer reminder so I'm glad you did! Rosie, we're all praying for you, dear friend and look forward to hearing that you're on the mend! ~ Hugs, Patti Jo
ReplyDeleteI would love to win a copy. I love her books, and I can't wait to read this one. :)

Shhh, Patti Jo. Don't bring up the paining again. I may want to stay at that hotel again sometime. LOL.
ReplyDeleteJackie and Sherry, I've got you on the list--and you, too, Patti Jo.
Hope all you ladies have a wonderful, joy-filled day!

ReplyDeleteI am a devoted fan and faithful follower of my Writes of Passage authors but it is always great to be introduced to new ones. Thank you. I would be very interested in this book.
ReplyDeleteThat is one delightful cover! The Ride of Her Life is sitting on the top of my "To Be Read" stack, and I can't wait to dive into it.
ReplyDeleteRosie, I'm praying for you. As a veteran of eye surgeries, I know how much it means to be lifted up by believing friends during the surgery and recovery time.
And Judy, I do hope you're working on that picture-pilfering tendency of yours. ;-)
Judy, thanks so much for sharing THE RIDE OF HER LIFE with your readers.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'd only tell you a "little" about my roller coaster research. :) Honestly, I enjoyed the research so much. If you want to see a refurbished 1902 rollercoaster (the oldest running wooden coaster) check out Leap the Dips on Youtube. It's in Pennsylvania.
Good luck to all of you in the drawing!
New author for me and the book sounds fun! My father was born in 1904 in Wisconsin, so I would enjoy learning about this time period. Love Historical Fiction!! It's the best.

I just heard from Rosie and the surgery on her eye went well. She goes back to the opthamologist to be checked in about an hour (6:00 p.m. CST). She said to tell everyone thank you for the prayers and as soon as she's permitted to use the computer, she'll post.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad Rosie's eye surgery went well.
ReplyDeleteI haven't yet read any of Lorna's books but they are on my "want to" list. It would be wonderful to win a copy of The Ride of Her Life. Thanks for giving away a copy.

Hey Judy!
ReplyDeleteSorry I am so late posting. Still having problems posting at my work computer, so I have to wait until I get home. But anyway love your post and will cetainly check out Lorna's books.
Hope all is well with you. Are you enjoying Spring? This is a very busy time at work (school) now. There is a lot of State testing going on and our office is in charge of that. But I do try to get out on weekends and do something fun. I went to see the new "Avengers" movie all by myself...and it was awesome! I love super-heroes movies and this one was the epitome of Super Heroes movie! To Tammy: I was the loudest one in the theater, giving my hoorahs to the heroes beating up the bad guys! I guess I'm kind of like them in a way; mild, mannerly and some say sophisticated by day...but at the movies I become "Crazy lady" LOL I DO put a limit to the slinging of popcorn as I twist and turn in my seat...I mean the popcorn is too expensive at the theater and I don't want to lose one kernel. LOL
I am so thankul that Rosie's eye surgery went well. Hey Rosie! (throwing kisses and waving)will continue to pray for an excellent recovery!
Love to you Judy and to all!
Veronica
