We're not in Kansas, Toto

Last week I had the privilege of traveling to Colorado, meeting with my new publishing board and then speaking to the Colorado Christian Writers at a wonderful campground near Larkspur. Even if I hadn't known I wasn't in Kansas anymore, I would've known I wasn't in Kansas anymore because....

MOUNTAINS! Honestly, how do Coloradans keep their eyes on the road with such lovely sights beckoning from every direction? I made my navigator, who happened to be my soul sister Kathy, very nervous by constantly gawking or shooting pictures through the windshield. (I couldn't help myself--oh, my, the landscape is breathtaking!)

And then there were these GREAT BIG ROCKS!

We drove through the Garden of the Gods park. Twice. Because I couldn't stop admiring. The rock formations are amazing. But it was raining, so I couldn't get out and wander. Maybe next time. *sigh*

I thoroughly enjoyed this glimpse of a rainbow following the rain shower! And I have to say, this particular view looks an awful lot like Kansas...but only because heavy clouds are hiding the backdrop of mountains. Isn't that beautiful???

Now, lest you wonder, there are deer in Kansas. But not generally in residential neighborhoods, as this one was. And you know what else? The deer chose to cross a busy street. With cars coming. And the cars STOPPED for it so it could pass. Um, sorry to say, I've not seen that happen in my neck of the woods...

Speaking of wildlife, when I reached the campgrounds, I spotted signs EVERYWHERE instructing one to not approach the bears. Um...BEARS??? Nobody told me about BEARS. I was not at all pleased to know that I might be sharing my space (not to mention my munchies!) with BEARS! (Really, when people invite you to visit a place, they should let you know about little details like BEARS. *ahem*) But, to my great relief, the only bear upon which we laid our eyes was the one on the right, which was hanging out in the camp dining room and proved to be harmless. (Thank goodness!)

But risking the possibility of meeting a bear face-to-face was worth it just 'cause of the wonderful peeps!

I have to share this fun pic of several of the retreat attendees--the ones wearing my favorite color: purple! We're all doing a "ta-da" to show off our royal color. :o)

I had such a wonderful time in Colorado, getting to know the professional folk with whom I'll be working over the next few years and worshipping with fellow writers. All-in-all, my visit to Colorado was fantabulous. But you know, as Dorothy says, "there's no place like home." And I'm content to be back in good ol' Kansas.

God bless you muchly, wherever you journey with Him! ~Kim

P.S. -- Darien, you won the Amish cookbook! Please send me your snail mail addy (kim@kimvogelsawyer.com) so I can get it sent to you.

  1. What beautiful pictures!! It's been years since I've been to Colorado...looks like another trip may be in the works! lol, my vacation/places to see list is filling up quickly!

So glad you had a wonderful time seeing the sites and meeting your new publishing board. And it is nice to be home...I bet Clyde missed you greatly!

  2. Loved your post, Kim--that deer was nice to "pose" for the photo!*grin* SO glad things went well for you, and I feel certain the retreat attendees were thrilled to meet you (cute "purple" photo!). ~ I agree with you though...there's no place like home. And ditto on Catherine's comment (waving to her!) about Clyde missing you. ~ Hugs from Georgia (where summer has arrived early), Patti Jo

  4. Catherine and Patti Jo, when I came home, Clyde did something he's NEVER done before. He bit me! Not a hard bite, but a "I'm not happy with you" bite. We had a firm talk about appropriate and inappropriate behavior and all is well now. :o)

  5. Hi Kim! What a great trip you had..just trying to picture Kathy's face as you took your hands off the steering wheel to go snap happy! At least she won't have that problem when you two go on next year's K-love Cruise!:)

I thought your pics were beautiful and I enjoyed looking at your countryside. I am yet to see a bear...have missed out twice now, but hopefully I will see one next time.

It seems you have a similar problem with your deer that we have with our kangaroo. Just when you least expect it, they will make an appearance, sometimes to our detriment or at least the car.

As I look at the beautiful picture of the rainbow, I can't but help marvel at God's amazing creation!

Thank you for a lovely Post Kim.:)

  6. Hello, Rosie! Yes, that rainbow was amazing. Clouds interrupted the view of the whole bow, but I found the other end planted in a valley. I always want to sing praise songs when I see rainbows. :o) As for kangaroos jumping into the roadway...wow. LOL!

  7. I didn't tell you the story about the bear ambling through out campsite a few years ago . . . and we had the weirdest thing. A bear was deep into the city a few days ago, just a mile or two from my residence, and I don't live on the outskirts . . .

    GREAT time with you, Kim!

  8. Ohmystars, Paula!!! A BEAR in your backyard??? Oh yeah, I'm happy to be in Kansas. LOL! I enjoyed my time with all of you, too--thanks so much for the sweet fellowship! Y'all are AWESOME!

  9. Awww...Clyde probably just really missed you. Our Immy used to do the same thing. She would nip at you when she didn't want to be disturbed. Sometimes she'd jump in our laps, but if we started to pet her, she would nip. Erik made a comment recently that she's not done that in a long time. I'm not sure why, but we have started taking a good 10-15 minutes each morning to lock Zara out of the bedroom when we're getting ready and play with Immy. Maybe she has just been trying to communicate that she needs more attention?

So maybe Clyde, with the move and then you leaving him behind, just needed the extra attention?

    lol...I'm the cat shrink!

  10. Catherine, I'm reasonably certain all of the upheaval has affected poor Clyde. He's such a timid cat--the strange people coming and going, strange surroundings, and his human disappearing for several days no doubt upset him beyond all understanding. I'm very patient with him--I know he isn't a biter by nature. :o) I'm glad your Immy is getting the required attention, too!

  11. Poor Clyde :-) He is such a cutie. I saw his new cover photo on Facebook...he looks tiny! I thought our Zara was small! Is he doing better though, now that you're back home?

  12. He has stuck pretty close to me. But so has Maizie, so they have to share my attention. :o) He isn't a large cat for a boy--long and lean, probably seven pounds. He looks especially small next our 20-pound bruiser, Sam! But most cats look small next to Sam. LOL He'll be okay once he realizes the people who come aren't out to get him. And he's safe in my office. He is a cutie--I'm glad he's mine. :o)

  13. Kim! All I want to know is...did you find the pot of Royal Gold at the end of the rainbow?:0)

  14. Rosie, I found a most glorious landscape at that rainbow's end, and it was worth gold to me. :o)
