| Me and Deb at the 2011 International Christian Retailers Show Atlanta, GA |
She tells me the truth no matter what. She points out what I'm doing right, along with what I'm doing wrong. She writes snarky little comments in her critique that can talk me back inside off a ledge faster than a Hostess Cream-filled Cupcake.
After nearly ten years of working together (which is just beyond belief to me), we've developed a frank and honest rapport that I treasure and that makes me a far better writer than I would be on my own.
Plus, she bakes rockin' great scones! View Exhibit A:

| Deb Raney's Craisin Pecan Scones (Apologies to all my GF friends out there, but hey...sometimes only a scone will do) |
Buttermilk Scones
Ingredients
▪
All purpose flour – 2 ¼ cups
▪
Salt – ½ teaspoon
▪
Baking powder – 1½
teaspoons
▪
Baking Soda – ½ teaspoon
▪
Sugar – ¼ cup
▪
Craisins – 1 cup
▪
Butter – ½ cup (1 stick)
cut in cubes
▪
Buttermilk – 1 cup (or sour
milk or half-and-half)
▪
1 egg – beaten well
Preparation
Sift together the flour, baking
powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar. “Cut” the butter into the dry ingredients
until the mixture resembles coarsely ground meal.
Add the raisins and
buttermilk. Stir quickly with a fork until the dough is soft and slightly
sticky.
Dust your hands with flour
and form the dough into a ball on a floured board. Knead gently about ten
times. Flatten the dough into a 1″ thick sheet.
Cut 2-inch circles of dough
with a cookie cutter or a small drinking glass. (Or drop 2-inch blobs on cookie
sheet and flatten with the heel of your hand.) “Paint” the circles of dough
with the beaten egg, then bake for 12-15 minutes in a preheated 425°F oven. The
scones are done when they have a light golden color.
Scones are best served
warm, with Devonshire cream (available in many supermarkets) and preserves
(usually strawberry or raspberry).
Recipe adapted from Janet
Benrey's Hunnechurch’s Buttermilk & Raisin Scones recipe.
And last but not least…

Deb's latest release, After All, is a fabulous story that's receiving rave reviews. Here's a peek:
Eighteen months after the tragic Grove Street Fire took the life of her husband and four other heroic firefighters, Susan Marlowe thinks she's finally beginning to heal. But then she discovers that David carried a secret to his grave-a secret that changes everything she thought about their marriage. For the sake of their sons, can Susan forgive the unforgivable?
Andrea Morley lost her closest friend in the fire. But she has no right to mourn him. Instead, she must forever grieve in silence-for someone else's husband. Peter Brennan carries the weight of the world on his shoulders. As Hanover Falls fire chief, he was responsible for the brave firefighters who lost their lives that awful November night. Can he ever shake the feeling that he could have somehow prevented the tragedy? And now it seems he might find comfort in the arms of the woman he least expected.

What would life be like without our sisters? I'm so grateful for the sisterhood we share here (and waving to you brave brothers out there too). People who speak the truth into our lives and love us even when knowing our uglies. It makes all the difference as we travel this earthly road together.
Think of one of your closest friends. Can you think of ONE WORD that would describe them? That makes them such a treasure to you?
Tammy

Hello Tam!
ReplyDeleteI read the excerpt of Deb's book and it's great..will definitely be purchasing that, WHEN it hits Aus (and who knows when that will be.... they take FOREVER!!)
I think I will adopt Kim's word for describing her "sisterhood" with Kathy! Definitely the word "Soul" says it all..sooo "Soul Sister" has my vote. In my eyes that definitely sums up everything I treasure about my very closest friend. She makes me feel so blessed.
And looking at your Post overall Tam..I'd have to say definitely, "Food For Thought!"
Cheers :)
Rosie
Good morning Tammy (and all my W o' P friends!)~ YUM!! Deb's scones look wonderful, and I can't wait to try my hand at making them. Her book sounds wonderful too and I'm always thrilled when she releases a new one (although my Deb Raney shelf is expanding *grin*). Deb is one of the very first authors I read after I "discovered" Christian fiction about 6 years ago--she remains as one of my "Top Four Faves" *big smile*. Love that photo of the two of you (and I might add--not one bit of snark shows in your pretty face, Tammy). ;) My very best friend (we go back to the 11th grade) is FAITHFUL---has always been there for me, and continues to be. Love her so much. ~ Sending hugs to all my friends on here (waving extra at Rosie, too!) ~ Love, Patti Jo
ReplyDeleteLOL Rosie! But uh oh, another punster! : ) Praying for your continued healing, friend. And yes to Soul Sister...
ReplyDeletePatti Jo, I LOVE that you said not one bit of snark shows in MY face! But please let the record show...you did NOT say that about Deb Raney. HA! Just sayin'... : ) And yes to faithful. So true!
I just downloaded After All on my Kindle...love Deb's books and have read them all! She is one of my favorites and for church library, also.
ReplyDeleteGood day to all WOP writers, who are also faves!
Woohoo, Jackie! It's a GREAT story. And the ending...oh! Loved it!! Blessings on your day, friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this scone recipe!! I came over from Susan Hollaway's blog today. Thanks to Susan for alerting me!
ReplyDeleteKathleen ~*~ Missouri
lanehillhouse[at]centurylink[dot]net
I'll say you're welcome, Kathleen, knowing that all the credit goes to Deb (who stole it, of course, from Janet). : ) Thanks for visiting. So glad you're here!
ReplyDeleteAh, come on. No one who knows Deb would believe for a moment that she has even an ounce of snark in her body. She's as sweet as those scones she baked.
ReplyDeleteShe's shifty and sneaky and can hold her own "snark" with the best of 'em, but yes, she has moments of sweetness. Occasionally. Few and far between. Quick flashes of "nice." But they're there. Somewhere. I think.
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Goodness! Where to begin!?
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, Tammy said, "Sometimes only a scone will do." I'm going to be honest and say, "sometimes only 6 scones will do." I kid you not, that's how many I ate yesterday!! Okay, they were fairly small (fairly) but seriously, 6. And two this morning (so far). They are THAT good. And yes, thank you, Janet Benrey!
Second of all, thank you, Robin Lee Hatcher. I want you to know I KNOW who my TRUE friends are and they will not be forgotten. ; )
Third of all, Tammy, snarky as you can be at times, I echo every NON-snarky thing you said. I can't believe it's been a DECADE now that we've been reading and critiquing for each other. The experience has provided me with so much joy and laughter, and I've learned SO much about writing from reading you. Let's shoot for another 10, shall we?
I always love hopping over to Writes of Passage. You guys really know how to have fun over here. It's almost enough to make a person want to start writing historical. Almost. ; )
I saw Deb's scones yesterday when she posted pictures on FB. They look delicious! I just may have to try and make them sometime.
ReplyDeleteTammy, you need to know I met Deb at a novelist retreat several years ago, and she mentioned your name so many times that I decided it was time to read one of your books. I was already hooked on Deb's books, and now I'm hooked on yours. You're two of my favorite authors.
One word to describe a close friend. Funny. I'm drawn to people who make me laugh.
Then you'd LOVE Tammy, Teri! She makes me LOL OFTEN!
ReplyDeleteEIGHT!? ROFLOL! 8 scones in the past 24 hours!!?? Oh my word, I think my GF side just rolled over and died. But oh, what a way to go! Deb, 'bring it on' for another 10, babe! Love you! And all your snark.
ReplyDeleteTeri, bless you for those kind words, and oh yes! on the funny. I'm drawn to people who make me laugh too. A day without laughter is wasted! ; )
Love your post, Tammy... and loving all the comments!! Y'all make me laugh! You're 2 of my faves as well! Will definitely need to try the scones!
ReplyDeleteI'm am very blessed that my best friend happens to also be my sister-in-law. We were friends before we were family. :) "Faithful" came to mind but a better one would be, in the words of Anne Shirley, KINDRED SPIRIT.
oops... not I'm am... just "I am". lol
ReplyDeleteLove that, Cyndi! And love that Anne Shirley. It's time to pull that out again and watch it sometime soon. Cool on your SIL being your BFF. :)
ReplyDeleteI soooo wish we could do a Writes of Passage Girls Weekend somewhere. Oh, would be so fun!
Silly me. I left my comment on your personal blog and got left sitting there all lonely by myself. Way to ignore people, Tammy! Gee! You really should be more attentive to your own site. You never know WHAT could be going on over there.
ReplyDeleteI'm with Robin. I've seen MUCH more of Deb's graciousness and sweetness than I've ever seen her snark. Can't believe she's put up with you for a decade. And she still looks so young!
Let me know if you ever need to borrow any duct tape for Tammy, Deb! Although as many scones as you've been eating, sounds like you could use some, too! Bwa-ha-ha!!
It would be wonderful to do a girl's weekend. Where could we go??
ReplyDeleteOne word to describe one of my closest friends? Gosh...trusting maybe? I'm thinking of my sis-in-law (which goes to show how God works, since 6 months ago, I wanted nothing to do with her due to the circumstances in how we met!). When we first met, and God showed me how much work He had done in her life, I was absolutely floored. She and I hit it off so quickly. But I say "trusting" because we can share everything with each other. The type of friend who, when you're naive like me and do things without thinking, they turn to you and say, "you're my closest friend. I know you would never do anything to intentionally hurt me"...and then we clear the air from there! :-)
Update on prayer request: my company waived the no-compete clause (I may have told ya'll that already)...I had an interview with Wilson County Schools yesterday. No idea how it went, but was told that there are at least 5 people applying to the two positions available. I'm hoping the fact I've worked with them for 3+ years already will help. Just keep praying if ya'll think about it :-) Love all the ladies here!!
Oh...and Deborah, I haven't read the book yet, or any in the series, but I so desperately want to!!
HI Deb and Tammy, I baked these scones today, and we really enjoyed them. Thanks so much! : )
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Carrie
Just prayed for you over on my personal blog, Linda. It was heartfelt. ; )
ReplyDeleteCatherine, praying for you, lady, that God will open the door He desires and that you'll flourish in his will!
Yay, Carrie! Wish we could have shared one together. Or EIGHT OF THEM, like Deb.
In the interest of TRUE sisterhood, I should let you all know that Deb Raney is the subject of TWO blogs today. Does that seem right to you all? I'm thinkin' it's Tammy's day here....
ReplyDeleteforgot to add ;P
ReplyDeleteOooh, Mary-Louise! You seem like a little bit of a trouble-maker to me?? Welcome! Welcome! You'll be right at home here! ; )
ReplyDeleteAnd Linda, my dear, dear, friend, you always come to my rescue when I need you! And just when I think you're my new BFF, you make a comment like the duct tape vs. scones one. LOL!
Carrie, the fact that you used "enjoyed" past-tense makes one think you ate ALL the scones already. Either you have numerous kids home for the summer, or you and your hubby are worse than Ken and me!
Oh how I love this blog! : )
Just for the record(*wink*) let me please add that my compliment to Tammy was NOT an insult to Deb! I'd never associate any snark-traits to Deb Raney ~ And besides that....she's a CAT-person too! An amazing author, lovely lady, AND a cat-person - - who could ask for more?!? Hugs, Patti Jo (who always makes herself right at home on this blog, teehee) ;)
ReplyDeleteLOL, Mary-Louise, I'm happy to share. I'm over here writing up a storm!
ReplyDeleteBut alas… just when my dreams of Patti Jo being snarky were coming true... Sigh, she goes and apologizes. Now I really need a scone...
ROFLOL at the duct tape and scones comment. Touche!!
ReplyDeleteA good friend never makes yummmy scones when I'm around.
ReplyDeleteA great friend duct tapes my mouth if scones are in the building.
A snarky friend lends me lipgloss that she spiked with SuperGlue so I can't eat the scones or say anything dumb.
A fabulous friend "accidentally" sneezes on the scones or drops the plate.
Cathy, who is still trying to invent a do-it-yourself liposuction kit with aquarium tubing, the tip from my WaterPik, and my Dyson vacuum.
Hey!!! You're giving scones a bad rap, Cathy. LOL! I have seen the enemy and he is NOT a scone. The trick is, "Eat a Scone, Walk 2.5 Miles." Or in Deb's case, 40 miles.
ReplyDeleteROFLOL! I will never live this 8-scone week down, will I? (Especially if I tell you that I'm having homemade ice cream tonight with friends for a belated birthday celebration.)
ReplyDeletePatti Jo, I like the way you think. : )
Off to hop on the treadmill for a few hours...
I have 2 such friends who are both gems in their own right. They are honest--although sometimes I have to drag it out of them ;)--while they always make me laugh. One could be described simply as "sunshine" & the other "sister".
ReplyDeleteLove that, Meghan. Sunshine and Sister.
ReplyDeleteLord Jesus, thank you for sisters and for the sisterhood we share here at WoP. And that the best is yet to come!
Loved visiting with you gals today. And now, I'm headed to write late into the night. 10PM til 2AM are still my most productive hours... ; )
I'm reading this as i have my morning coffee...and i'd say the scones look good enough to eat. i have been looking for Deb's series, as that looks awesome too.
ReplyDeletei guess my very best friend would be my brother, who keeps me true and accountable.
loved this post. thanks
Ah Tammy! As I said before,"Food For Thought." You will simply have to make them GF and them maybe you could double Deb's record of consumption. ROFLOL at the mere thought of you doing so!!My imagination is running riot!:)
ReplyDeleteWe could run a competition on WOP called Feast or Famine... the rest of us feast and you?.. Oh dear!) ..someone has to famine. LOL.
PS Still love you!:)
Meghan! Loved your comment about your "Gems." Are you into "gem" scones too?
ReplyDeleteUm, Catherine, really...where could you go for a girl's weekend? Kim's B&B, of course! LOL
