My office got a makeover this past week, including some new shelves in the storage closet (much of which has been a disaster since I moved into the house five years ago and just never had time to reorganize). After a busy Sunday afternoon, I am finally beginning to feel organized and ready to begin work again on Beloved, after a two week break while working on the copy edits of Betrayal.
Anyway, I found a poster (slightly crinkled) while cleaning the closet that one of my publishers made for an event about seven years back.
In case you cannot see the snapshot for some reason, I was asked, "Why are you passionate about writing stories?" My answer was, "I'm passionate about writing because, through the gift of stories, I can share small glimpses into the lives of ordinary people who face heartaches and difficulties and, in the end, learn to trust God more because of them."
There are many things that I don't know or understand, but one thing I do know with absolute certainty––God called me to write for Him. Doesn't mean it's always easy. In fact, it's rarely easy. But at least I know that I'm doing the work He called me to do.
Our God has a plan and a purpose for every one of His children. What are you passionate about? Where has He called you to be at work in His kingdom?

Since I was a little girl, I've been passionate about missions, and even had the honor of serving on the foreign mission field for 8 years in the Dominican Republic. I'm also passionate about women's ministry, especially in helping hurting women find emotional and spiritual healing in Christ.
ReplyDeleteAs a writer, God has called me to write Bible study materials that have been used in women's ministry, and in more recent years, He's called me to write fictional missionary stories set in the Caribbean, where I weave my passion for missions and the passion I have for ministering to hurting women into my stories.
Wonderful, Teri. Thanks so much for sharing, and may God bless you and increase your borders as you serve Him.
ReplyDeleteI've always had a passion for working with children, and SO enjoyed my 21 years of teaching first grade, then kindergarten. But when the Lord closed the door to that career (due to spinal issues) I knew for certain He was opening the door for me to pursue my lifelong love of writing. In addition to that, however, I also truly feel called to what I refer to as "Little acts of service"*smile*. I honestly don't feel the Lord wants me to serve as a missionary, but rather serve in small ways here in my hometown. So I take great delight in doing very small things (taking donuts to our firemen, making treat bags for students at my son's college, sending lots of cards to elderly, etc.). Very small acts, but I always pray that in some little way they might brighten someone's day. ~ On a humorous note I suppose anyone who knows me really well might say I'm "passionate about CATS" LOL ~ Purr-haps they'd be correct.... ~ Hugs, Patti Jo :)
ReplyDeletePatti Jo, we are to serve where we are planted, and it sounds like your small acts touch lives all around you. God bless you! And may He use your writing to touch even more people.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, we might assume you are passionate about cats. (Pinky sends her love.)
i could say i'm passionate about books - reading them that is, and sharing what they've done for me. i love farming, most of the time, and dogs. i've never met a dog i couldn't love, and kittens are too sweet for words until they become cats with attitudes. Ours are farm cats, so after that i don't see much of them unless i am playing with the dogs...i'd have to be a dog to be able to play with our cats.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your passion, Robin
