Today, July 25, is National Carousel Day, so hop on a horse, a giraffe, a reiondeer or sit in a chariot and enjoy a ride on a merry-go-round if you can locate one in your town. If you live here in Topeka, you can enjoy a ride on a 1908 Herschell-Spillman carousel that houses a 1909 Wurlitzer band organ or you can go to Abilene and visit the C.W. Parker Museum and ride one of his carousels. To the left is the Allan Herschell Carrousel Company in Towanda, New York (established in 1872).
If you live in Iowa, you can choose from four carousels. The one located in Story City is a 1913 Herschell-Spillman, the one in Mt. Pleasant was constructed in 1894 has the original hand-carved animals. There are two replicas, one in the city of Arnolds Park, Iowa and other in Des Moines. Below right is a Herschell-Spillman band organ.
Those of you who regularly visit Writes of Passage know that I have a genuine fondness for carousels which led to me writing The Carousel Painter several years ago. I know I’ve shared lots of pictures of carousels, but I couldn’t let today pass without once again sharing some of my favorite carousel pictures. I stand amazed at the craftsmanship of these artisans!
A wonderful trio of reindeer--aren't they spectacular?
A sweet trio of giraffes looking spotty.
And a wonderful chariot for those who prefer something more tame.
And in honor of National Carousel Day, I'm giving away a copy of The Carousel Painter.
Here's a quick peek:
When Carrington Brouwer receives the enviable job of painting carousel horses for a factory in Ohio, she believes her future is secure. But after an expensive necklace disappears from the home where she’s been staying, she’s caught up in a search for the truth that puts her entire livelihood—and her developing relationship with the factory manager—at risk. Can she lead police to the real culprit before she loses everything?
If you're interested in winning, just leave a comment and your email address in the comment section below anytime before noon, Tuesday, July 31 and I’ll post the name of the winner on August 1 here on this blog. Sorry, International and Canadian friends, only U.S. mail addresses please.
May you find joy as you explore your creativity.
~Judy
P.S. Nancy Mehl is going to be doing Book Banter on her new Mennonite suspense book for Bethany House on Thursday from 11:00 to 1:00 CST, so hop on over and enjoy some fun with Nancy as she tells you about her writing journey and latest book--but wait until tomorrow--she won't be there today. :)

Judy!
ReplyDeleteLoved your post, it brought back so many memories in my child hood.
We used to ride the "Hurdy Gurdy" or "Merry Go 'Round" as they are mostly called over here and I can still see my Dad's smiling face as I anxiously scanned the crowd to see if he was still there, each time we rode around and I would wave to him.
We felt so grand as our intricately carved horses went up and down on the poles,(just like Mary Poppins) but I also liked the sleigh, because my Mum used to ride with us too. She still loves the carousel.:)
To my ears, the carousel organ was magical, the music played was special and no other organ sounded anything like the one on the carousel!
Just recently,we took our "little boys", down to the theme park and they had a ride. The look on their little faces was so so cute, as they did exactly what I used to do.. look for us and wave. I have to say my children all loved the carousel too, then they discovered the bucking bronchs!LOL! Me? I still love the carousel and believe it or not, I took the Carousel Painter off my bookshelf yesterday and am re reading it for the sixth time!
Great post Judy and thanks for taking me back down Memory Lane!:)
Hi Rosie,
ReplyDeleteI remember doing the same thing--always looking for Mom to wave to as I went around. There's something magical about seeing someone you love watching and waiting as you go round and round on a carousel. Fun memories!
Hi Judy, Way back when I was a little girl, there used to be a Park in my home town it was called the Bavarian Festival, anyway we used to go on the Carousel and back then they had these rings you would try to grab when it went around and around, If you caught one of the rings you would get a prize. That was before the little seat belts and Buckles they have now. I love the horses and how they are painted. I would love a chance to win a copy of your book. Thanks so much Mary Brown email is mbb1214@hotmail.com Thanks so much.

I was so happy to come across this! I love carousels! I live in Ohio, where there is a running carousel in Mansfield, just 20 minutes away. They've restored a very old one beautifully and I love taking my kids to ride it. I like watching all the kids smiling faces and thinking of historical times gone by, when things were in some ways simpler and art was more appreciated by the masses. Love taking my children's pictures with the different animals. I would love to read this book and review on my blog!
ReplyDeleteThe book looks wonderful. Thanks for allowing some lucky reader to win one. jingle@sbselectric.com

ReplyDeleteDefinitely enjoyed the post. I can't tell you the last time I was on a carousel. We have one at Opry Mills Mall that flooded in the May 2010 flood. When they reopened the mall, they had completely restored all the animals from the carousel. :-)

ReplyDeleteWould love to read this book. I grew up in Niagara on the Lake, ON and there was and is a simply fabulous carousel in St. Catharines, about 10 miles away. It still cost 25 cents to ride the last time I was there.

As a small child I loved riding the carousel when the fair came to town every October. Although I'm sure I've ridden carousels with animals other than horses, my favorite was always a horse. I also remember the fun of either riding with our children when they were young, or cheering them on when they rode by themselves.
ReplyDeleteA furniture store near us has an old carousel in the children's furniture area. They charge $1 per ride, and give all proceeds to Make a Wish Foundation.
Would love a chance to win your novel. Beautiful cover! terimetts@gmail.com
I am writing this on my wife's behalf. We are a military family and far from any family, so she treasures her books. When I saw the cover, it reminded me of my dad, who recently passed away. Whenever or where ever we would find a carousel, he had to ride it, it was very peaceful to him.
ReplyDeleteWith my wife's birthday coming up, I know she would be thrilled to win this book and what a suprise for her it would be. Thank you for considering us in your giveaway.
Just heard of FB about this special day so hopped over to view your site. I remember the Merry-go-rounds of my youth and always wanted to hop up on those prancing horses. I would love to read this book, sounds very interesting.

It's amazing that carousels always bring a smile to my face. I wouldn't say I have a special moment or favorite animal for me it's just the pure joy that you see when kids/people are on it. As I heard today, how many times we go around and we still wave to those who are not on it :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post and the pictures!

I'm a carousel purist - I loved the horses. As a little girl I always wanted my own horse more than my next breath. :D Now that I'm older and could actually afford one - the amount of work that goes into the upkeep has caused me to love carousels more than ever.

I would love to win...and I must say it wasn't a matter of what animal I wanted to ride on, but picking one of the ones that went up and down.

Carousels remind me of a time when I was about 7 and visited my aunt in KC, MO. My mom allowed me to bring my best friend along for the weekend. I remember going to the mall after church, riding the indoor carousel in our Sunday dresses!

I love the cover of this book -- it make me want to dive right in! The Herschell company was actually located in Tonawanda, New York -- right between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, New York. Tonawanda is Indian for "swift water, rushing waters". The Iroquois Indians were from this area of western New York. Lots of rich heritage and history! The Wurlitzer company known for theater organs and jukeboxes was also in Tonawanda, NY. I grew up in Tonawanda -- I can remember driving by the Wurlitzer facility so many times as a child and hearing all about their history from my mom. Thanks so much for the trip down memory lane!

Wow, Miss Judy! I arrive late today and see there have been a ton of comments. Whew--busy day--feel as though I've been on a Merry-go-round (pun intended)*wink*. Seriously, I loved your post and had NO idea this is Carousel Day. Although I can't get quite as enthused about this as I do about National Donut Day(grin) it's nice to know about this day. As a child (and even young adult) I LOVED carousels! Now I'm afraid I'd get too dizzy on one (pathetic, I know).~ LOVED your book THE CAROUSEL PAINTER, so whoever wins is in for a wonderful treat!!! Hugs, Patti Jo
ReplyDeleteI loved this book. When I was a kid there was a century old carousel about a 5 minute walk from our home. Rides cost a nickel a piece (and still do) and we could spend a whole afternoon riding it on a weekday for less than a dollar (it was usually slow business during the week so the operators would let each ride run for at least 5 minutes), We would collect pop bottles that people discarded alongside the road, cash them in at the local corner store, buy a bag of penny candy and ride away to our heats' content. Ah, the memories!
ReplyDeleteConnie Kiers
would love to win! Thanks for the chance!
ReplyDeleteThe carousel pictures are lovely, and they brought back many fond memories. When I was a child, I would always choose "the most beautiful horse" on the carousel to ride, and it had to be a moving horse, not a stationary one. As my children were growing up, we would frequent two parks that had old Dentzel carousels in them - Highland Park in Meridian, MS and Pullen Park in Raleigh, NC. They would love to ride. Please enter my name in the drawing for your new book: bcdowdy@msn.com.

Hope all is well with you, take care friend.

Just recently took four children to Silver Springs in Florida, and they got to ride a carousel for the first time. The man let them ride two times and they were thrilled.
ReplyDeleteHaving just gone to one of Pgh's oldest amusement parks & watched my baby sister ride on the gorgeous, restored, old carousel, this book looks great! Whether or not I win it, cannot wait to read it!

When I was a little girl I loved to ride the horses on the carousel. Sadly the last time I rode a carousel I ended up getting very dizzy, therefore ending my rides on the horses.
