Historical characters we love to love

Christy Huddleston, Elizabeth Bennett, Mr. Darcy, Scarlett O'Hara, Rhett Butler, William Wallace, Eleanor Dashwood, Cousin Violet (Downton Abbey), Lieutenant Dunbar, Kicking Bird, Anne Shirley…

I can fall in love pretty quickly with characters from historical novels and movies. But I especially love it when a novel contains true-to-life historical characters. People who really lived who have been "immortalized" in fiction. Robert Green, a character in my next novel, To Whisper Her Name, is one such man.

The first time I heard of "Uncle Bob" Green, I wanted to learn more. And the more I learned, the more I admired him. So it was a natural transition for him to make his way onto the page. And as I wrote, I only grew to admire him more...

So many times as I was writing this novel, I could hear Uncle Bob speaking. It helps that we really do have snippets of things he said, so that gave me an advantage. I'm so grateful for the staff at Belle Meade Plantation, the setting of To Whisper Her Name, for answering my endless questions as I wrote. And wrote and wrote. I couldn't have written this book without them.

And now, for the winner of the DVD of Sense and Sensibility that I promised to give away in last week's blog...

Veronica Sternberg

Congrats, Veronica! Please send me your address and I'll get you your DVD.

So tell me, who are some of your favorite historical characters? I bet we have some in common!

  1. Christy Huddleston, to be sure! Jane Eyre. Anne of Green Gables. Jo and her sisters in Little Women.... And I'll already say, "Ditto" to a bunch that others here will mention. (I have faith in our common love of reading.)

  5. When I think of true-to-life historical characters that I've gotten to know through fiction, I think first of all of Laura Ingalls, her family and friends in the Little House books. I still read through the whole series every other year or so.

And some of my favorite fictional, historical characters are Scarlett O'Hara, Rhett Butler, Ashley & Melanie, and the whole Gone With the Wind cast - another book I've read over and over again since reading it for the first time when I was twelve.

  6. Oh my goodness! Reading through your lists makes me want to pull out my movies and then run to Netflix! It's amazing how characters can stay with you, even through the years. Thanks for sharing, everyone!

  7. My favorites are some that others have named: Scarlett and Rhett, Melanie and Ashley, Anne Shirley, Amy, Jo, Beth, and Meg in Little Women, and Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. (some of that fondness for characters showed up when I named my daughters Amy and Rebecca *smile*). ~ Cannot wait to read TWHN--and these wonderful videos you're sharing are making me even more eager!
