The Space Shuttle is rolling down the streets of LA.
Rain came down at over 6" per hour and we had flash flood warnings. (Remember that song, "It never rains in California.....it pours, man, it pours") It sure was true this week!Water spouts formed just offshore of our beaches.
The last couple of days around here have been newsworthy.
A reporter said the Shuttle's two-miles-per-hour trip wasn't just once in a lifetime, it was a "once ever" event.
I'm not so sure I agree. Vehicles of all sorts crawl through traffic that slowly every single day.
Admittedly, not with hundreds of beautiful old trees being felled ahead of them.
As for the rain and water spouts... Our grand-ducks didn't like the rain; they ran for cover! And about Dudley and Daisy..... it turns out they are Dudley and Duke. Yes, both are drake Hakes.

It's the odd, unexpected, and funny twists that make life exciting. The same goes for books. An odd setting, an unexpected turn in the plot, or funny circumstances and characters always grab my attention. What books have you read or are you reading that have captured your imagination?
And speaking of unexpected and funny things.... last week's pictures earned some great captions.

Will you help me with my flossing? I don't have thumbs. ESSIE
Please send your snailmail addy to Words4bird@aol.com, and I'll send you your Starbucks gift cards!
GALS, with that kind of imagination, I certainly want to read whatever you're chosing...... and hope to someday read what youve written, too!

Cathy

Well Cath, we can't boast about having the space shuttle landing over here, but what a bit of excitement for you and unusual to say the least, or should I say most?!.. Such a shame about all your lovely old trees though! We did see it screened on TV.
ReplyDeleteThe best I can come up with in that sphere, was the Galaxy (the biggest plane I had ever seen) fly in from the US to Alice Springs Northern Territory (Aus) about 37 years ago. It was awesome to watch it landing and the fact it was capable of carrying up to six Boeing Aircraft was quite beyond belief! It was (still is I believe) the world's largest aircraft and caused quite a stir in "The Alice!"
The Concord also coming to Melbourne Victoria (Aus) 42 years ago was another bit of excitement. My eldest daughter then aged 2, ran around saying to various people, "Do you know the Concord is supersonic?" People just stared at her in disbelief. What some didn't know, was that her father was formerly a Pilot and then an Air Traffic Controller and she just picked up the jargon without having an earthly clue as to what she was saying!
Whoever said, "Out of the mouths of babes?!"LOL
The one thing we can identify with you at the moment is the amount of rain we have had over here and just in the last couple of days, snow in some parts of our State. Also in Victoria and New South Wales too. Very unusual for South Aus to have snow, let alone in Spring! It looked like a winter wonderland with the snow hanging off the trees and a white blanket covering the ground. What is happening to our seasons? They are certainly changing.
Had a giggle about Dudley and Daisy er I mean Duke..no little quackers for you, out of those two!LOL!
Loved the captions for your pics too.:)
Have a great day/night watching those Disneyland lights!
Cheers dears!
Cath, I always look forward to your posts on Saturdays! Glad you got a chuckle out of my "bad hair day" caption--it was fun viewing all those funny pics you shared last week. ~ Wow, you have had lots of newsworthy happenings in your area! And I had to giggle at the Hake Drakes--hope Duke isn't traumatized at being formally named Daisy*grin*. ~ Something I'm about to read that will be certain to grab my attention isn't actually a book, but rather some papers I found at my in-laws' house last week. We were going through things (since they're both in Heaven now) and deciding what to keep, etc. - - and I came across a story that an elderly neighbor had written and given to my father-in-law. It's titled "Coming to America" and apparently tells about the man's family coming over to the US from somewhere in Europe (my FiL mentioned this to me shortly before he became ill this past winter). Anyway, as soon as I find where I put the story I'm digging in and reading it! (*sigh*We came in with storage tubs full last week, so now I have no idea which tub this story is in, but I'll find it!). ~ Hope you're feeling well these days, Cath. Hugs, PJ
ReplyDeletep.s. Rosie, am chuckling about your daughter (at age 2!) exclaiming to folks about the Concord---so cute!!
ReplyDeleteRosie, the grand scale of things certainly does make an impact. Seeing the sheer size of the Endeavour towering above the buildings and stretching clear down the streets is staggering. The thing is five stories high!
ReplyDeleteLOL about your daughter. It's entertaining--and humbling, at times, what little ones hear and repeat. I'd get a kick out of a two-year-old squirt talking about anything being supersonic!
Yes, the weather seems to be wonky everywhere!
And PJ, you labeling that little porcupine with a bad hair day was priceless... no doubt because I can relate!
Cath
Hey Ms. Hake,
ReplyDeleteJust to let you know, I didn't come up with that awesome caption about flossing. :(
But these new captions made me giggle again too!
<3 Essie :)
I just ran in , a little late! But it seems to me that you were asking about books we are reading. Just finished reading The Girl In The Orange Dress by Margot Starbuck. And now am reading Small Things with Great Love by same writer. Both non-fiction, but would not want anyone to miss out because they didn't know about them. Thanks for asking, Cathy
