I’ll be the first to admit February is my least favorite month of the year. It’s the month my mother died and the month Jim was diagnosed with cancer. It’s the month we usually have snow in Kansas—this year is no exception, and it’s the month I usually put up with at least one major appliance going haywire—again, this year is no exception.
February is also the month that makes me feel as though winter will never end. At the moment, the snow and ice are heavy on our power lines and newscasters are using their cheeriest voices to tell us we may lose power as the heavy, wet snow continues to fall. Why do weather forecasters always sound the happiest when the weather is at its worst?
Okay, back to February. Since this is my month of gloom and doom, I thought it a good time to share something I heard on a morning talk show some time back—probably February 1st. This is going to sound downright dismal to some of you, but bear with me because it really is important. A young woman was talking about the sudden, unexpected, accidental death of her husband and the difficulty she experienced as she attempted to locate all the information she would need to complete paperwork, and make claims for insurance—it took her years to sort out the paperwork.
Because of her difficult experience, she set up a website. You may find the name a bit off-putting, but you’ll remember it—and the information is valuable. The website is Get Your Sh*t Together. On the website, you'll find free documents to download and wonderful information as well as a monthly blog that will nudge you toward your goals.
Many of you (I hope) have Wills, but there is a wonderful checklist of things that many of us don’t even think about. Passwords for computers and cell phones, online bank account passwords, what automatic payments come out of your bank account, where are your insurance policies and what are the numbers. Go out there and take a peek at all the free information she has for you—and then DO IT FOR YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS. If you want to watch the interview with Chanel Reynolds (the creator of the website) you can see it on the CBS website.
Many of you are already acquainted with Carol Cox since she has graciously filled in for me during my absences from the blog. Carol, her husband Dave, who pastors two churches, and their daughter, Katie live in Arizona. Her son, Kevin, is married and he and his wife, Samantha (Sam), have blessed Carol with two darling granddaughters.
Carol has been published since the mid 1990’s and has authored more than twenty books. Her latest, Trouble in Store, will be available in June. In the meantime, if you haven’t already enjoyed Love in Disguise, do give it a read and discover Carol’s wit shining through the pages.
Please join me in welcoming Carol as a permanent contributor to Writes of Passage!

Just, thank you so much for the website. I already have some of this stuff together for Erik if it's ever needed...but it would be great to both get it more organized and see what I've missed. February is only a couple more days. Praying that God will walk super close to you for the remainder of the month.
ReplyDeleteWelcome Carol! It's wonderful to have you officially part of the WoP family!!
Hi Catherine,
ReplyDeleteGlad you found the information helpful. That checklist is super helpful. I'm rushing off to BSF, but will be back to "visit" with y'all later this morning so let me hear from you!
Your info is invaluable Judy and everyone should heed your advice. It can save a lot of heartache and frustration and makes it so easy to follow step by step.Like Catherine,I thought we had everything covered and as frequent travellers, we definitely need everything at our (rather cold)fingertips,to make it straightforward for our precious family back home!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for the advice.
@ Carol,as you so kindly dubbed me an honorary Arizonan, I am delighted to say I love your State. I kept seeing signs for Flagstaff and Glendale and of course had to photograph them! LOL! I simply can't WAIT to meet you dear Lady.
Am so pleased you are now permanent on WoP. I enjoy reading your posts,so... "Welcome." :)
Judy, that was a lovely introduction. Thank you so much! And thanks, Catherine and Rosie, for the warm welcomes. I've always loved filling in on WoP, and it's a joy to be able to consider it my home now.
ReplyDeleteOne minor tweak to the intro--in addition to those darling granddaughters, we now have a grandson to round things out. All three, of course, are gorgeous, adorable, and brilliant. ;-)
Rosie, I hope you don't freeze during your visit to "sunny" Arizona. Our temps in the northern part of the state have been downright frigid lately. Stay warm, and I can't wait to meet you in person!
I hope to see you all on Saturday for my first "official" WoP post!
Oh Miss Judy...my heart goes out to you with your melancholy February feelings, and I've been (and will continue) praying for you, sweet lady. And just think--SPRING is around the corner (yes, it's there somewhere...hiding maybe, but it's THERE!). *grin* ~ Thank you for this very wise, important information today--something Hugh and I both need to follow up on. ~ ~ I am SUPER excited that Carol will be a regular blogger now on Wr of Passage!!! YAY!!! And I have to admit...early this morning when I was wondering who you would be introducing, I "secretly" hoped it would be CAROL COX!!! So Welcome Carol, and we'll try to behave (although with this crowd I cannot promise anything *wink*). Warm Hugs from Georgia, Patti Jo
ReplyDeleteRosie, glad to see you're up and about and taking in more of the beautiful Arizona scenery.
ReplyDeleteCarol--I'm blushing. How could I forget your sweet little grandson. Mea culpa, but I know you'll forgive me--at least I hope so!
Thanks, for all your prayers, Patti Jo. You are such a wonderful prayer warrior and I am truly thankful for you! Can't wait to see you in March!
No need to blush, Judy. You just haven't heard as many stories about the latest one yet. Give me time. ;-)
ReplyDeleteAnd Patti Jo, thank you for the sweet comments. I appreciate you so much!
Thanks for the reminder Judy - I don't have a current will - not sure where the old one went naming guardians for the children who are now adults. Sigh. Sometimes these things just get away from me.
ReplyDeleteHi Judy,
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean about February. Mother's passing, Husband's funeral and our wedding anniversary happened in February...I'm glad that the month is winding down. The dreary cold weather does not help. We are going to make it just fine my friend. Prayers and the fact that Jesus is walking right beside us is guarantee that we will. Thanks for the helpful tips. It is very important that we have "our house in order", even though we don't like to talk about it. I am so thankful that I had a husband that made sure things were in order years before he even became ill. I in turn have made sure things have been updated and my family know the whereabouts of important papers. These things make it
so much easier for the family.
Welcome Carol! or should I say "Welcome Back!" looking forward to getting to know you better!
Judy here is your big hug {HUG}, take care my friend, you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Tracie--you need to get crackin' and get that stuff done! I may have to send you a monthly email checking on your progress. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Sweet Veronica,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your kind words, dear friend. Maybe we should X February off the calendar each year. :) You are such an encourager! If we don't get to meet in person this side of heaven, you be prepared because I'm gonna give you one giant hug when we meet up there!
We are into March now-LOL Happy Writing-Enjoyed the post!
ReplyDeleteHi Judith! I'm just now catching up on the blogs I follow. Things have been quite busy this week. As for the perkiness of weather forecasters when storms are brewing... That's the most exciting thing that could happen in their job, and I believe they flourish under those circumstances. Which, typically, the rest of us don't. :)
ReplyDeleteWelcome, Carol! I look forward to reading your blogs and learning more about you.
God bless, ladies!
Andrea
